LR dope : chrony or kestrel ?

Interested to hear your opinions and reasoning on the following...

Would you rather spend $$ on a flash harry chrony, or would you buy a kestrel and calculate MV based on observed drops and atmospherics ?

I always confirm no matter what my chrony says. Especially for the change of seasons.
I'm am still waiting for a more reliable setup to measure velocity that is affordable.
In saying that my CED2 is close enough for my needs. Just a pain if there is a bit of wind.

I have an oehler that gets used fuck all, and then only for early stages of load development and ballistic data, and I have a Kestrel that comes with me every time I use a rifle.

I'm still happy I have both but if I had to pick one it would be the kestrel.

Since I dont access to a range longer than 200 metres then I only go off my base zero and average chrony readings so I cant shoot at anything further out and physically measure drops.. and thats why I use a ballistic program to help.

Kestrel or wind meter only helps left to right but is still an essential tool

Scoped, kestrel helps for a lot more than windage....

Play around a bit in a ballistics program and see what temp, elevation and air pressure does to your click values. Beyond 500yds it gets significant enough to matter.

I have access to the Tararuas, several 6,7,8,9 & 1000yds ranges within walking distance

isnt it easier to just zero and chrony your load and input the atmospherics in automatically through shooter on your iphone etc? and verify if theres any difference by shooting at a known long range and seeing if its bang on/close/miles off? or am i doing it the hard way as always haha

Ardave, the process you mention is very good, it just wasn't an option in ebf first post in this thread where he asks a very specific question about two components.

And to answer your question, yes your way is easier and often requires less ammo, less ammo used to get the desired poi at distance as a chrony will get you very close to poi with your first few shots

Kinda depends on the distances you test at, as well as the accuracy of the chrony, no ?

I think the vast majority of guys test at ranges of 200m or less. Not optimal for confirming LR drops.

Also, unless you spend serious $$ and are every careful about setup, I am not sure how accurate the average chrony is.

If your drops don't correspond to what the calculated trajectory for chrony MV is, which variable do you change ? MV, atmospherics or both ?

    You change the unknown.
So if you have say a litz bc and accurate atmospherics you won't be changing them change velocity.

If you were using a bullet of unknown bc and had a pretty accurate velocity you would change bc to suit drop.
