Thread: Magnum LR primers vs LR

Was shopping for some large rifle primers today and the guy tells me I can use Magnum primers as a substitute, he was completely sold out of LR primers. Is this an option? Loading for 22-250 and when I get around to picking up some 270win brass that too.

I run magnum primers in my 260. Also used them in my 284 for a period of time. Might just need to re visit your load due to the change.

In my 6.5AI using WW760 powder I succumbed to the "experts" and tried magnum primers.
Saw a fractional increase in velocity, opening up of ES, opening up of groups.
Reverted to BR2 primers. Maybe could have frigged around with load, seating depth etc but wasn't worth the effort.
YMMV.

The go with primers is to just use a primer with sufficient energy to ignite your powder charge, no more is necessary. For an extreme example, you wouldn't use a magnum primer in a 22 Hornet. (Duh, maybe some do?)
There can be quite a variation between different primer brands and also within the brands with their different types. Used to be a good chart on the internet but cannot find it now. Pretty basic, was photos of the flash brightness and length at the muzzle, in a darkened room. That's why its important to recheck your load if changing primer brands.

There is a theory that powder scattering into the bore can occur with too powerful primers.

Magnum primers obviously have their place with igniting large columns of powder.

Also though if std primers are unavailable magnums may be the only option, for a while, until they too become in short supply. Rework up your load.

Seeing suggestions from the States that primer supplies there are going to be grim for the next 2-3 years. Plus stories of 1000 primers selling for up to US$400!
Lot of places there only selling 1 lb powder cannisters per customer instead of the usual 8 lb jugs which are seemingly becoming unavailable.

Just did a check and I'm down to 7000 primers left. I think that will see my lifetime out.

Exactly same rounds except for LR vs LRM primers. LRM lower SD as Mimms said.

The Remington are impressive!

The differences make me wonder about the timeing of the photo and or the frame rate of the video if it was fast enough to capture each at their biggest?

If you look at the fed 205 it looks tiny but to me it looks like a very clean hot flame like getting a perfect neutral oxy acetylene flame vs some of the bigger ones that spray out lots but dont "look" to be as hot or clean a flame.

I have no way of knowing eiher way just how it appears to my eye.

Mate did some testing in his darkened garage. Cannot recall which primers tested but using the eyeometer there were noticeable differences.

Before I go and get something other than the usual, does anybody have some unpopular Winnie Large Rifle primers they want to sell? 3 or 4 packets be plenty.

Man, just had a look around and a lot of sellers have run out of std primers but have the magnum but in some cases only in low quantities.

Would expect that some of the smaller guys may have some squirreled away still.

Did see Fiocchi std LR at Gunshity. They aren't too bad a primer.

Yea it's a bit that way, got the last 5 packets of CCI 400s from a retailer down the line the other day. I think I saw Reloaders in Auckland had a couple of options but only in 1000s.

If anyone is seriously stuck for primers I could be talked into trading Fed LR for SR.
