Thread: Moving from AMAX to ELD

Hi all,

I'm keen to hear from anyone who has used the Hornady ELD-X or match and particularly if you were using AMAXd before to compare them with.

I'd like to know if they are performing the same for you and if you think the eld-x or eld match are the way to go.

I'm currently using 162 Amax in my 7RM but looking to move to the ELDs soon. The amax have been excellent for me in the past but they seem to be getting in short supply now so makes sense to change to the ELDs soon.

They are working just as good as the Amax and have a bearing surface that's further forward, so fit better as "just touch loads" in most magazines.

What powder are people using for them in their 7mm Rem Mags? I've been using IMR 4831 but thinking about going back to ADI.

2225 or 2217

72g of 2217

Usually gives 3030- 3080fps in most tikka/sakos with mag fit 162 grainers

I use 2213 SC, 65 grs ( higher than Max in the loading book) Found it safe in my REM 700 7mm Mag, getting around 2955 FPS out of 24 inch Barrel. Work up to this load if you choose to try it.

Myself and 3 mates use 73grn 2225 in sako remmag works great. 3 shots touching. 3000fps

adi 2225 73.5 grains with old 162 amax

Given the different shape of the bullet was there much or any difference in amount of powder used between the eld and the amax to achieve the same speed and were pressure signs reached earlier or about the same? Are they pretty much interchangeable?
