At what stage of successfully killing the deer would you consider that the bullet failed?
When the same combination is poked in to a tough animal close up, more speed will fragment the projectile sooner and it may not reach the vitals.
Soft projectiles kill great...... Until they don't. Then they leave a horrible mess.
