    Neck/bullet welding?

    Hi all,

Just a question re do bullets eventually ‘weld’ themselves to the necks of old brass? Only reason I ask is was given some very (10 yr +) old 22-250 rounds to depose of and tried pulling the projectiles and they where basically ‘welded’ to the necks and ended up ripping the projectiles in half.

So that got me thinking - if you do get a bit of adhesion of the projectiles to neck over time, how long before a match should you long your rounds?

Yeah, it does happen, but I haven't heard of it to point of ripping projectiles in half!
The trick is to push the projectiles a slight amount deeper in a seating die to break the bond, then they will pull a lot easier.

    It’s called galvanic corrosion

Common with dissimilar metals in long term contact with each other

As mentioned seat deeper to “ crack” the weld then pull with collet puller

If you assemble your ammo with graphite powder in the necks and on the projectile the problem goes away
A big fast bullet beats a little fast bullet every time

So what’s the general timeline for seating bullets for a match? Just wondering if I’m organised a month out from a match, is it actually going to affect ‘neck tension’ if you like?
