Thread: Neck sizing, need expander?

Hi. I'm neck sizing 7mm magnum brass. I punch out the old primers with another die. So do I need to use the expander/decap piece at all. The measurements seem like I don't need any expanding after running through the die. I'm just an average hunter so looking for simple more than perfect.

You say you are looking for simple, but it sounds like you are putting the brass through two dies to decap and neck size. Why not do both at once with the neck die?

Good point. Old habit is my answer. I'll reconsider.

I only use an expander when I have a damaged neck on a newish case I think can be salvaged.

Depends on the die. I'd say if its not a bushing die your necks may be very tight without the expander going through it. Use the die as intended and save yourself the heartache/headache.

Lee collet dies.. thats what I use on my 7RM and others.

Get a Lyman M die only expander that woks properly I have one for every bullet diameter from .22 to 45
helps stop the neck stretching.
