222 Rem. Mag. Ack. Imp. About 5% more powder capacity More useful if necked up to 6mm

Real guns start with the number 3 or bigger and make two holes, one in and one out

Dredging my memory banks but I believe that the factory loadings for 280 Rem are used as the control/start point for the ackley gains used here?

The 280 Rem was originally developed and chambered in lever gun options? And consequently were not particularly highly pressurised factory rounds... Handloading a standard 280 in a modern action was considerably better than earlier factory offerings?

The gain shown above may be reflective of those low pressure loadings on the standard case? It may not be as significant against a well developed standard 280?

I may be wrong about this.....like I say I am relying on memory....

Sidney the 280 rem is a long action cartridge based on the 30-06 as the parent case. You are thinking of the 284win which was the caliber put out in a lever action.

That correct Sidney, Remington chambered it in there lever and semi autos trying to find something to compete with the 270 winchester.Pressures where lowish. They try ed renaming it in the late 70s "7mm express" and quoted higher velocities but it didn't take off and created a bit of confusion so they went back to calling it .280 rem. As to the gains with the ackley improved unless your properly set up with pressure testing gear and worked up in 280 then re chambered to AI in the same barrel its just guess work but the gains are there along with a few other benefits.

Pretty sure that I know what a 280 Rem is as well as a 284

Yeah.. getting 250fps on a 280 rem and nothing on a 270 sorta tells something about the factory loads of the 280...

You do get a wee bit extra usually on the same case with a bigger bore but 0-250fps from .277 to .284??

Heck my 6.5x55Ackley from factory loads 140s in the standard 6.5x55SE at around 2400-2500 to over 3000 is even better...

Seems rather strange to me that out of all those 30/06 based cases you get a performance gain from Ackleyising the 25/06, 280 Rem and 30/06 yet no gain for the 270W..........very strange.

AI should be done if you are thinking of it, they look plain sick in all cals an all gain from it. An fire forming not a issue. Load them an hunt. Then do load development after.

Longer brass life is a bonus as well.
