Thread: Pet loads for the 7x57

What say you all? Looking around the internet there seems to be two different data sets for each projectile weight, one being very anemic and one with a bit more spice. I'm guessing there's a lot of data out there that's been developed for old military actions etc much like the 6.5x55?
Rifle is a BSA viscount. Would it be safe to assume it will handle "modern" pressures?

Seem to recall I ran 49gn 2209 behind a 140gn prohunter in my viscount... can't lay my hands on my 7x57 data so don't quote me! I do recall it hated all BT projectiles, FB shot well.

@Ryan_Songhurst if it's in good condition you can pretty well use 7mm08 data

I run 45.5 gn AR2209 behind 140 gn Rem corelokt, out of Rem cases.

Hi Ryan, I only now use the 130gn Speer and 48 gn of 2209.

42gn's 2206H with 140 SGK for 2714fps, or 47gn's 2209 with 150 Corelokt. BSA Viscount.

bush load=big fat flat or round nose load toddling along.....suit yourself for out in open. youve used .270 for years,its not a HUGE amount different,little slower but with vastly more projectile options,assuming you can find some.

@Ryan_Songhurst. I owned and loaded for a Hunter, similar if not same as Viscount. Longtime ago now. No problems that I recall. Don't have any data noted but from memory was always close to max from reloading manuals published in the 70's nd 80's. My current loads have been developed for Ruger M77 Mk1 with a Shilen barrel. Usual disclaimers apply.
140 Accubond 47.7 N204 2700 fps, 140 Nos BT 48.9 760 2830 fps. Rem 150 coreloct 48 2209 2700 fps. All happily under minute of angle, although the Rem's can be a bit of a bitch in regard to projectile consistency. I've found the most consistent powder to be W760. Am currently working up a load with H414, some say it's same as W760 but that's above my paygrade. I've pushed the envelope a bit with the 140 Nos Bt, simply trying to get as much velocity as I safely can and still under MOA. The aim to get the projectile to perform at longer range. I use F210's with all powders but have also used Winchester with no noticable difference. 7 x 57's an awesome cartridge.

Found my info. 49gr with 140 BT gave great accuracy and around 2900fps in a Viscount belonging to a mate. I've yet to load for mine & check it's liking.

52 grains of 760 W behind a 139 hornady interlock flat base in my discount really gets it humming, very accurate load. Like someone else said flat base bullets only it seems work in those BSA otherwise they throw them all over the place.

The Viscount will definitely handle modern pressures. When sorting out loads for the 6.5x55 I used .260 Rem and 6.5 Creedmoor data to establish maximum velocities and then adjusted for the extra case capacity. You could probably skip the last step. Next I worked up to that velocity which will probably take a little more powder than the 7mm-08. Ken Waters stated that he could not achieve 7mm-08 velocities in his 7x57 rifles without excessive expansion which I think was due to the latter cases being softer. Feel free to PM me if you want some worked examples.

I have an older Interarms Mark X, barrel shortened to 21in and DPT Suppressor. Two successful hunting loads.. first is Remington 150gn Cor-Lokt, SP FB, with 49.5gn RL19. Average 2650fps. Second, Speer 130gn Spitzer SPFB, 52.0gn RL19, 2750fps. I also made a load up for an old Govt Culler for his BSA Hunter that has many miles on the clock. He wanted to emulate his factory ammo. He was printing clover leaves at 65m with 139gn Hornady Interlocks over 37.0gn 22065. Not chronoed. Said after a few groups he had never got as good with factory ammo.

Graham Henry wrote an article years ago (40) about the 7x57 - I think using a Hunter.
Anyway I distinctly remember him getting 2,800 fps with a 139 grn bullet using W760.

I have an old Nick Harvey hand loading manual here and he quotes a max charge of 50 grains of W760 for 2,900 fps from a Brno ZK. Sounds pretty warm to me, as a lot of Harvey's loads seem to be.
