So I'm wanting to develop a new load for my horse back hunting rifle in order to use the one short handy carbine for all my big game hunting, on horse or otherwise.

So the rifle in question is a 7m08 cut down to 17" or so with a can,
The projectiles ive good heaps of are 162gr A-max I have for my 7mmRM that I'd like to use.
The appropriate powder I've got on hand is ADI 2206h and 2208 I'm thinking 2206h because of the short barrel.

Has anyone here got experience sending such a heavy projectile through a short barrel like this and what sort of results did they get.
The loading data claims 2600fps out of a 24" tube. I imagine that would do the job for the ranges I'm going to be shooting at.

Once I get my model 7 back I can let ya know what my recipe is.
I'll be running the 160gr tmk from a 16" barrel.

So similar and should get you in the ball park area.

I loaded 162eldx from an 18" barrel 708 with 2206h. Hot load but accurate, I can only imagine the amax will be even better. I got 2660 or 2680fps though

Cheers guys, I might make up a couple of batches both with 2206h and 2208 and see which one preforms better,
I'm not keen on going really hot, 162 is a fairly large pill and I don't think it will lack for take down power.

If you refer to ADI pistol data for 7mm08 it may be more useful than the rifle data.

Reason: Pistol data for 7mm08 is based on a 15" barrel

Yeah, SAAMI max psi for the 7mm08 is 61k psi so 68k is .... Hot...

I had a good look at the pistol loading data for 708, I also have a box 120 BT here that I might use up first, they seem to be getting pretty good velocities with lighter rounds out of short barrels, I'll make one big batch of all my remaining 120BT then develop a load for the 162gr.

Interesting to note that they seem to be getting beter results from the 2208 than the 2206h. I seem to remember it the other way around for short barrels, Must have been only in the larger bores.

The idea that faster powders are needed in short barrels is largely a myth. It gets repeated ad nauseum in the firearm press but it is still a myth. Actual tests do not support it.
