Thread: Posting Brass from the States.

I was wondering if it is ok for a mate to send me unprimed brass in the mail, would it get held in customs?

@robh500 everything I have seen says brass needs an export permit to leave USA.

On this side no import permit required as its not a firearm part

I am just talking to reloadingInternational to get a load of 303 and 54r brass sent over, but,

"An Export License is required to ship bullets, brass and other reloading components out of the US. The export license authorizes the export of reloading components for personal use only."

So if your mate pays cash and no ones ask Qs it might get here, or he could end up in jail. I dont think NZ customs will care its just brass, it will be the US customs who stop it.

Rats! How do I get a export permit? I've already paid for the brass and it's being sent to his house.

Send the brass to a registered exporter and be prepared to pay more in export fees than the brass is worth.

Buy a plane ticket to the States and bring it back! and Ill give you a list of the brass you can bring back for me! Pisses me off that shotgun brass is no problem, rifle and pistol is a no go.Good luck

and if US customs catches him he'll be making number plates for a few years and if he has a cute ass, could start to walk funny.

As banana says, the registered exporter will want $100US+ as a minimum charge I would think if not more they seem to charge like a wounded bull, let us know how it goes. Your mate maybe better off selling it on ebay for you (if he can?) and getting the brass via reloaders international who only charge 10% for the permit work.

Well that was a fuck up then! I only ordered it yesterday, is there anything legally stopping him from having it in his checked baggage?
My plan was/is:
Both he and I are working in PNG, he is heading home to the US for a break today, I ordered some brass to be sent to him and was either going to have it sent to me in NZ...... Maybe not now. Or bring it in his baggage back to PNG then I will put it in my baggage and bring it home.
Does he need a export permit to have it in his baggage?
I know you are allowed up to 5kg of LOADED ammo in your check baggage without any paperwork.

§123.17 Exports of firearms, ammunition, and personal protective gear.

(e) Port Directors of U.S. Customs and Border Protection shall permit U.S. persons to export without a license ammunition for nonautomatic firearms referred to in paragraph (a) of this section if the quantity does not exceed 1,000 cartridges (or rounds) in any shipment. The ammunition must also be for personal use and not for resale or other transfer of ownership.

A mate sent me some last month ( for about the 3rd time) but this time they were siezed by the US customs buggers and my mate got a very nasty letter from them. Unbelievable !

Starline ship direct to NZ without any issues. They are approved I guess.

Also, I've purchased brass in the US and carried back without any issue too.

Bugger, wasnt long ago that they did. They were cheap too.
