Powder for 123 Amax in .260

What powder do all you .260 guys use with the 123 Amax?

nzfubz sent me some to sample and I finally got around to testing them.

I used 2209 and while scary accurate I could not get them much above 2950fps without reaching pressure, that I am comfortable with.
I use the same load with 129/130 class bullets and have them going as fast but with no pressure and a long case life.

Happy to stay at 2950 as I have yet to shoot a group over .3 with the 123 so far. Very happy with that for sure, but would have thought over 3000fps with the Ackley would be expected.
Faster powder maybe, but I thought I would pick some brains before I try to anything else to save some time.

    Cheers.

2209 or VV N550 or W760. If its a 24 inch barrel 2950 is getting near max vel anyway. Weight is not the only factor bullet bearing surface, hardness diameter also influence things. Somme 155 308 match bullets have such a small bearing surface you can push them another 50-70 fps over 150 gn sporting bullets.

My barrel is 24" I am using 2209 now but have some other powders including N550.

It is an Ackley and I get 2950 with heavier bullets and great case life. So I would think no where near max with a 123, although with 2209 it indicates I am at near max @2950.

I am sure velocities are accurate as I have a V3 magnetospeed.

I was getting 3097fps from 45.5gr RL17 from my 30deg Improved with the 123gr Amax. Maybe some 2208 could be worth a try? Or as mentioned WW760.

H414/W760 changed my 7mm08AI into a different beast, getting easy 200fps over my 2209 loads.

I use Re17 to drive them in my 6.5x47. If you can find any.

Been there done that. I liked the powder but its lack of availability put me off it. I will try some 760 and see how I go. Otherwise will just settle on the 2209 load.

rough rule of thumb when loading for the 260, projectiles under 130gr use 2208, 130 and heavier use 2209, seems to work well.

Thanks to those that suggested W760.

Got a nice accurate 123 Amax load worked.
    3040fps. Nice tiny little groups.
No pressure signs and using less powder than I did with 2209.

Will try it with heavier bullets when I get a chance.

Wind died down a bit an hour before dark so I shot up to the club to test a load and finalise another.
    Using W760. Goes good😆

Shot the one on the right first. 129 gr interlocks. 2950fps 11fps ES over 5 rnds.

Made sure I adjusted my position to shoot the group on the left but I still managed to pull my first shot.
Had something a smidge wrong with my setup as the MPI with the Amax is 1/2" higher.

Earlier today it was identical to my other loads when shooting at the same mark.

Was running out of light and didn't like my last shot either but still went well under an inch for 5 rnds if I ignore the first.😆

    123 Amax 3040fps 12 fps ES
I reckon I could probably stay under any pressure with another grain of powder but do not see the point.

    I friggen love them.😆

Have used them since I had a 6.5-06. They went as good in that as well.

They kill as well as any other bullet I have used and I have shot them on paper and steel out to 600 with great results.
Best, cheap .264 bullet out there imho.
