Powder for 22-250
Hi there Genius Hive Mind
I shot some 55 gr Sierra SBTs in the new 22-250 today and got some really good groups with 2206H. So it's looking like it can shoot well, but accuracy with 2206H is at average of 3426 fps. I'm thinking that I'd like to try another powder before I settle. I'm certainly not a speed demon but wouldn't mind getting to 3500.
What should I try next?
It's a carbonlight with a factory barrel which ain't long, at 20.5"
Cheers!

I run BenchMark 2 in my Tikka 22-250. I'm shooting 50gr Vmax with 35.3gr of BM2 and is running at 3850fps shoots great

Ok sounds like the one, thanks!

Every rifle is different so would still recommend starting by the book and working up to suit your rifle. But that powder combo works very well for me and my rfile

Don’t worry not my first rodeo 😃

If you can find it, H380 from Hodgdon. ( or its ADI equivalent)The story is that 38 grain of that powder behind a 55 grain in a 22-250 was producing exceptional accuracy, hence 38.0 aka 380.

Yea I’m getting 3600-3700 with h380 in my kimber groups good and seems pretty economical

Cheers for that what barrel length do you have? I figure with a 21” barrel I shouldn’t expect too much
-
Mines 26” so yea you might be a bit slower but I would try h380 what’s your barrel twist?

Twist is 1 in 14. 26 inch that’s a good long barrel alright 👍

Greetings WillB,
My son had good results with AR2208, 3,650 fps and Benchmark 8208 in his 26 inch barrel XR 100. You should expect to loose roughly 200 fps in your short barrel so Benchmark 8208, aka IMR 8208 XBR, could be a good bet. Data is on the Hodgdon and probably ADI sites. H380 is a ball powder, originally surplus, so there is no ADI equivalent.

I use 36 grs of AR 2208 with the 55 Noslar BT at around 3600 fps. 24 inch barrel.

thanks for all this guys, that's really helpful. It looks to me that most likely I'm pretty close to what I can expect in this barrel already with 2206H. If we take 200 fps off 3650 in a 26" barrel, we get 3450 which is pretty much what I've got now at 3426. I'm working from the ADI and Nick Harvey manuals for this - and yes I noticed that H380 doesn't have an ADI equivalent. It's interesting to me that the popular 22-250 powders seem to cover quite a range of burn rates also. Anyway thanks again.

WillB one of my 22-250 rifles has a 22" barrel and I am getting 3607 fps with IMR 8208 XBR with the 55 gr Sierra SBT. This is in Lapua brass and Fed 210M primers. With your 20.5" barrel I would expect you would only lose 60 fps at the most. One of my other 22-250s with a 23.5" barrel is pushing the same projectile at 3661fps with the IMR 8208 XBR and 3611fps with IMR 4895. Same brass and primers.
