Thread: Powder for 6.5 06 and 140gr projectile

funny thing with magnum primers...about HALF of the loading manuals etc will say to use it with the likes of 2213....the other half say std.
I bought a thousand magnum primers cheaply so thats what I use for everything except subs.

With RL26 and the 06 case size, I'd recommend the Federal 215M as the fire starter.

Hmmm - I don't know that I'd buy a can of RL-26 just to "gain something" but if nothing else would shoot it might be worth a try . .

Does anyone think that I should go higher with the 4831 first
as I said I maxed at book max [Hornady] at 49.4 for very slow but above [ Thanks Tentman] Q/L is telling me 55gn is OK
I'd work up naturally but it is a heck of a leap.
@Mathias, I use 210M, so 215 is that the magnum primer?

Your measured velocities seem to be in line with the QL predictions Tentman put up on the 3rd for 140gr bullets with 2213sc/H4831sc. The concern if I understand correctly was more that the readings were jumping around as you went up in small charge increments rather than any reason to believe that the peak pressures were anything other than very mild?
Appropriate burn-rate double-based powders (N560, Re-22, Re-26 etc.) would give you an extra 50-100ft/sec over 2213sc, but given the accuracy potential of 2213sc in your rifle I would be carrying on with development up into the 2850-3000ft/sec range, while looking for a combination of accuracy and lower ES.

Who chambered your rifle and what sort of throat did they give it?? (I never looked at your velocity results till just now) as it sounds like you may have a long freebore. Have you tried seating a bullet out to the lands . . . if so what length did you get??

As @Puffin has said the Loads apart from the last were inline with the Load you put up @Tentman, I was /am just a it weary, more than a bit, of going over book max by 6 odd gn to achieve that. @Tentman I seated at 3.33

keep going up slowly...watching for bolt lift issues or marks on brass or flatterned primers..... only YOU will know when you think its getting hot...or drop projectile weight to gain speed.LOL

Well if Mark did the chambering it will be RIGHT, i.e. done precisely and correctly. However its still usefull to know how much freebore it has, he'll know how he throated it even if he didn't discuss it with you . . .

Ok, I'll ask him tonight about the free bore, and I'll go up in single loads At 1/2 a grain each looking a speed and for signs of pressure.

Funny you should bring this up I was just getting stuff sorted from a day out

I friend gave me some AR2225 to try but I couldn't find much data so left it for today just upped the H4831 and along side used a Magnum primer

Results were, all 4831, remember Hornady book max was 49.4 but Tentmans Q/L gave me at least a 55Gn window

So we started off about 60FPS faster using the Magnum, but as the charge got bigger the gap closes till after 5 gns up it is half almost what it was.
I still think there is easily another grain in the Load maybe as there were no visible signs of pressure and no felt signs either.
