Thread: Powder/projectile recommendations 300wm

Hi guys,

My mate has recently obtained a 300 win mag (carbon fibre everything, nice custom rifle) and he has decided that once he has got through his factory ammo he is very keen to start reloading.

He is thinking he would like to run projectiles in the 160-180gr range, most likely Hornady ELD-X or SSTs.

I have no familiarity reloading for the 300wm specifically, so I am wondering what powders people would recommend for the 300 win mag for a good accuracy/velocity with projectiles in this weight bracket? Feel free to recommend other hunting projectile/powder combos as well.

22, 25, probably 23 and 26.

I use 22 with 150, 165 and 180s. It just works well with everything and I have kgs of it. Lots of choices.

Yeh RL 26 is good, as are 2217,2213SC with the 180 gr bullets. I use the 200 gr ELDX with both RL26 and AR2217. There are other powders in the IMR Range like 7828 that would be fine also.

80 grains 2217 with 178 ELD X is my load for 3030fps

If you want to push your rifle out to a long range go to 230 or 250 A tips

I never tried anything lighter in my 300wm but with the 200gr ELDX i was loading 76gr of 2217 in hornady brass with a fed215 for 2900fps, 24" barrel.

I have three rifles in 300wm. Barrel lengths are 24 26 28 inches. They all get 80 gns of 2217 with a 165 sst at 3050 fps to 3190 in the longest barrel

Im usung 178 eldx with 77gr of 2217. Pushes them at 2900 with my 20inch barrel.

There is plenty of good data around and I have not loaded the .300 Win Mag so will leave the comments on projectiles and loads to others. Belted cases can require some extra steps and I suggest you might like work with someone who loads the belted cases to take you through them. With some rifles there can be problems with resizing to give both easy chambering and decent case life. Others may wish to comment.
