Thread: Primers?

I have not reloaded yet, but I am planning to start shortly.

This may be a dumb question, but I have googled in every way I could think without getting a definitive conclusion: if I reload the brass recovered from Hornady factory ammo, is it Large Rifle primers that I need?

From a couple of different forum threats people seem to use CCI Standard, CCI BR-2 and Federal LR Match primers together with Hornady brass.

The original factory ammo where the brass came from was:
- 6.5 CM 129gr Interlock
- 6.5 CM 140gr ELD Match
- 6.5 CM 143gr ELD-X
- 6.5 CM 147gr ELD Match

Or you can safely use CCI Magnum primers. I use these in 6.5 with 143 Gr ELDX.

i use 210 in everything except my 264wm then i use magnum primer

My 20" long 1-8" Trueflite ultra match Creedmoor barrel stabilizes the 147gr ELDMs just fine..


5 shots at 100m

Howa 24 inch 1-8 6.5CM seems to do ok with 147ELDM's

Have had best results with Fed 215

Couple of other things to consider, how strong is your primer strike from your firing pin.
What type of powder are you going to burn.
Some firing pins fall lightly such as the standard Tikka, so Federals would be a good choice for them.
Some powders like a hot igniter like a magnum primer. W760 powder is a classic for needing hot primer ignition.

Will use H4350, and shooting from a Howa. Do not really know about the strike from the firing pin since I do not something to compare it with. This is what the strike look like on factory ammo:

A simple way of checking which primer to use for a particular cartridge is Wikipedia

It is worth experimenting with a couple of different manufacturers to see what gives you the best results

"Match" primers are the same as "normal", but have undergone more stringent quality control processes.

For most hunting applications, a normal primer will be fine. If you get into serious target shooting like F-class or benchrest, match or benchrest primers would be worth it.

If you do decide to use magnum primers, remember to use a lower starting load when testing.
