Reasonable speed for 300 win mag?

My mod 700 300 win mag (24”) barrel is firing the 180 grn Nosler BT at 2965 fps average. Grouping is excellent (.5 MOA) Seems a bit slow though. Is it, or is this about what I should expect?

I was expecting it to chrono at 3,100.

    I’m using 75.5 grns R22.

I use it out to about 500 yards, but would use it out to 700 yds if I really needed to. So maybe anything gained by a bit more speed will make such little difference I should be happy with what I have got?

The original load development with that rifle showed 3250fps with 150g ballistic Tips and adi2213sc, and 3000 fps with 180g ballistic tips and adi2217, both projectiles gave 1/2 inch groups at 100yrds.

I would be happy with your velocity, especially with the accuracy you have.

Thanks A. You set that rifle up beautifully. I recently put a 3-15 HD5 with the dial turrets on it.

Nice setup, the 30cal certainly packs a punch and fantastic energy at distance.

My semi/non educated guess is the speed is pretty good.
    Run it!
26" you might pick up 70? Or so fps but 0.5 MOA seems pretty good to me!
What would another 120fps get you at that range? 4"??

My 300 is doing about the same with 165gn accubonds and Speer BTSPs. A mild load but it shoots really well and it doesn't worry me if I have to dial up a bit more at distance. It still packs a punch.
Accuracy is far more important at long range than outright velocity if you use the right bullet.

VC. You are getting 2965fps with a 180gr from your 30-284? Man that's hauling ass.

My 26" barrel is getting 2960 odd from factory 180gr loaded winchester ballstic silver tip, which I believe, could be wrong, is loaded with a nosler bullet.
    With poor accuracy.

My take on this is speed is good........for windage.

At realistic hunting ranges even the lowly 308win will do the deed very well 700+ yards with the right projectile, but picking the wind is the issue!
