Reloader 17 load data for 284 Winchester

    Hi Team,
I have a 284 Winchester arriving any day now. I've been pointed in the direction of Reloader 17 being the most optimum powder. I'll be shooting Hornady 162 ELD-M projectiles. I don't feel like spending the $75.00 or so for the Hornady reloading book. Does anyone know of the minimum and maximum load?

    Thanks in advance

Plenty of powders other than Re17. Hornady lists Re19 @stagstalker doing same development at moment, he may be able to help you out

Reloader 17 load data for 284 Winchester

Just download it and save it.

I used both R17 and 19 but ADI was possibly more accurate in rifles I used

I've tested a few powders incl Re17 in my 17 inch barreled 284 with 162 Amax.

Re17 didn't give me any better results than other powders I already used.

H414 and IMR 7828ssc go very well in mine and are generally in better supply that re17.

    Also don't forget ADI equivalents.

I'm about to recieve in the next day or so an F-glass rifle with a 284 barrel & 6mmBR barrel and I see the load the seller used for the Winchester 284 was ADI 2209 powder with the Hornady A-Max 162gr bullets.

Heaps of RL17 available from the wholesaler, even 5lb containers, so don't let that put you off

    Greg Duley's published R17 load for a 16" barrel and 162 grn was 56grn for 2750fps.

In my experience with 284s that would be a pretty warm load, to say the least. Start around 52 gn and work up. I’ve found 53-54 gn is safe and accurate load with 160-162s

I found RE17 will produce higher velocities but also more recoil. I primarily use AR2206H in mine which produces better accuracy and less recoil but I only use 150 gr GK

I've never had any issues with AR2206H / 150 gr GK making stuff dead even with big reds out to 300 mtrs out of a 16 inch barrel

It's good to know there's plenty of RE17 that's come in because it was non existent for a few years where only a couple of tins would be shipped in but i have heard through a few people but yet to confirm it myself that RE17 is more temperature sensitive.

My 284 with 17” barrel using rel 17 and 162 ELDX hit pressure at 52 - 52.5gr. That’s with a throat OAL of 2.445” for the 162 ELDX. At pressure it was giving me about 2750fps. Wouldn’t shoot them accurate until backed off to 50.5gr for about 2620fps. Apparently the ELDX gives more pressure due to the thicker jacket. I’m gonna try the 160TMKs next and then maybe the ELDM and Berger VLDs. I’ll be happy with anything over 2600 from the 17” barrel and 160 projectiles anyway. Energy beyond what i would shoot a deer at.

I'd be fairly cautious about 56 Gns, even 53 gns is likely to be around 70,000 psi, which is pretty hot, the Q/L data for 56 gns says 90,000 psi which is well beyond "hot"
