Thread: Reloading the 7x64 Brenneke

This arrived today, Sako AV in 7x64, with old type Sako rings and a tasco vari power, and a box of S&B 173gr ammo.

pretty tidy for a 20 plus year rifle, bit of bluing wear, few very small dings in the wood work,
bought redding dies and two pks Remington 140gr core-lots, (cheap $32)
think I upgrade the scope. nice little compact of sum sort.

Well had the AV, 7x64 out this days off, and sighted in with a cheap 3x9x40 Leopold.
Pretty impressed, shoot well, and has a very nice trigger, 140gr factory rem are ok, 25mm at 100m, previous day getting sighted in, was more like 35-40mm, average
rifle seams to like the S&B 173gr, 14mm group at a 100m
and a 50 and 45mm at 200m on a very gusty windy day.

my 7x64 loves the 150 gn partitions - puts 4 -5 rounds into a ragged 0.3moa hole.

@southernman that is a very tidy rifle, shoots well too.

Got sent this info, may be of help to others, now to find a couple lbs of Reloader 26 or 17

@southernman that QL data is very interesting- would not have considered RL26 or 17 for this cal. They look very quick ��. Amazed at the huge difference between RL26 & 25!! I thought 26 was just a more temp stable version of 25???
Any chance you could run same data for 280ai ?

@chainsaw - I'm happy to run it for you - whats the projectile, COL, barrel length and you'll get best results if you supply the water capacity of a case fired in the rifle.

Sweet, thanks @Tentman much appreciated- I’m away for a few days so will need to dig out COL when I’m back. 24 in bbl, 1:9 twist running the old 162 AMAX.

Yes I thought so too,
Looks like loading the .280 or7x64 to 60000 psi with good powder selection, may prove very worthwhile,
I be happy with the 162 gr at 2850-2900, hope my rifle is twisted fast enough,
Find out next days off, got a couple lbs of R17 coming, reloaded 26 is proving much harder to locate, pretty much everyone is out right across Canada,
I have might have to get sum one to run quickload for me with R 17 in the 9.3x62, looks like a very useful powder.

@southernman - Hows it going - give me the inputs for your 9.3x62 and I can run that too. In my 7x64 I got on best with AR2209 with 162's. I got heavy bolt lift at 2900 with RL17 , with 2209 it was happy at 2900, however my goto load settled on 53.8 of 2209 for 2820fps - still a good snorty load. The 7x64, 280 and 284 are all within a gnats whisker of each other for case capacity so differences in performance are pretty academic . . . .

@Tentman checked the load record, running 3.340 col in 280AI with the 162 AMAX.

Thanks for that, I think the 280ai has bigger case capacity at 65.0 gn H20, but confirms the powders I’ve been working on. Original loads were with RL22 and although I could push them close to 3000 FPS before hitting pressure signs the accuracy node was back at 2850. Recently been playing with N560 after @Tikka7mm08 post and ladder test gets me to 3035 FPS with 162 AMaxs and slight pressure signs at 61.5 gns. Also tried IMR4350 which got up to 2950 FPS before pressure signs. Interesting though IMR4350 comes out well down the QL list. Next step is to find sweet spot with N560, fingers crossed !
