reloading press

hey people. starting the fishing now.
One day after I've slowly accumulated all the other goodies like dies etc. I will need a press.
It has to be a big one as once I get my 416 back it would be nice to do some other loads so I could shoot it a bit more.
If I ever get my A into G ill go back to my mates place on the coast and load the rest of the projectiles up that I had there from years ago on his press, just don't get over that way much
Its a red one so probably a lee? Ill ask him next time I'm talking to him but it is an O press. Not one of the open front ones. At a pinch I could get away with a C press but it would be better for the big cases.
Where I'm going with this is that what do you guys recommend and how much should I be paying?
then one day as fundage allows I'll start tracking one down.

[EDIT] Serious Shooters have a Big Boss II on sale for $379, that's not a bad deal I reckon

What other cals will you be reloading for?

@Max Headroom 243, 270 and one day either 7mm rem mag or 300 Mag. @Tommy didn't want to break the bank too much although I know that can lead to false economy in things like that.

use patience and wait for a good second hand one.

I'd say Lee classic turret for any of the bog standard stuff like 243, 270 etc.

Faster than an O style press,and you can put your dies for one cal in a lift out 4 hole plate so's you don't disturb your settings changing from one to the other.

It can also be used as a single stage press by removing a connecting rod in the middle . Very simple. $200 ish. new

Much less mucking about. Not sure how well it would support bigger stuff like the 416.

Redding Lyman RCBS Forster Hornady Stay away from Lee, if a press is going to break it will be a Lee before any other,
I have abused my RCBS Rockchucker since 1970 never had problem with it same with my Lyman Chrusher11 had that
since 1996 use it nearly every day sizing cast bulets, Buy the best you can afford you will never regret it

Hard to beat the RCBS press, I don't know what model mine is but had it since the early 70's and still works fine, it's loaded a few rounds now.

unless its a super great deal I will certainly consider a 2nd hand unit. If it wasnt for the 416 I could probably get away with a smaller press.
Im not into target shooting so it's not like I'll be putting 1000's of rounds through it either.

I bought a Hornady 007 in the early 90's, only press i have ever used but it does the job. Only issues have been when what i attached it to wasn't strong/heavy enough!

For a press the lee cast turret press is the way to go. Tool head allows multiple dies to be set up but not as complex as a progressive. You can even get a primer feeder.

I've had one for 10 years loading 303, no problems.

Lee scales are junk look elsewhere. I have a lee powder thrower, not the best but it works. Lee collet dies and crimping dies are fine.

I know you lot are a bit touchy about Aussie stuff, probably just a little jealous of us, :D but it is bloody good gear, I have three of their Super Simplex turret presses that get most of my loading done with, and I did have one of their Master O Frame presses, its pretty unbreakable and from what I can see locally, pretty keenly priced as well. They do have very good and helpful staff and get back to any queries you have pretty quickly. :thumbsup:

Never seen any Simplex stuff in NZ, not to say it isn't here somewhere.

Every broken press I've seen has been cast aluminium, and all Lee apart from one broken Dillon 550. The Dillon didn't burn the guy, he took it to the local agent (where I saw it) whereupon they pulled one from a box and gave it to him, no questions asked. Seeing as you're doing jumbo stuff, don't mess about and get something green.

actually contacted them for some stuff for an incomplete 303-25 die of theirs I acquired and yes very prompt and helpful.
It would be nice if the decapping pins didn't come in a bloody 5 pack lol. that along with the expander plug cost more than I paid for the die. I could just cheap out and buy the plug only and decap them manually.

@Kamel Shame we dont seem to do "local" with Aussie Simplex presses. A few dies turn up from time to time but the presses are pretty rare here.
If you were to buy one and ship it here there wouldnt be much change from $500, you can go for a Redding or RCBS at those prices

Back in the 1970's there was Simplex sold in a few gunshops around the country I knew a couple of guy's that used it, But have not seen any new products from them in many years,
I have seen the odd bit of gear at gunshows.

Yea I have been using one of there presses for about 30 years a bit rattly but it does the job.

I bought a second hand crusher on here a few years ago.

@Tommy I took your advice and bought the big boss 2 from serious shooters in Auckland, it arrived this morning and it looks the goods. I already have the Redding dies, powder, primers and bullets, I will just buy the other needed essentials over the next month or so and then get into it. The guy at serious shooters said the price was going back up so seems I may have got it at the right time. It came with 3 reloading magazines so some good reading there as well. I already have the right recipe (load) for my riffle as I got heaps loaded on another press so should be good to go soon. Thanks for the advice Tommy :thumbs:

They had a couple I think, in theory they go up to $429 on Monday but he says if he has any left and it's mentioned they saw it at $379 on the NZHS forum he'll do the old price of $379. He's a GC

Yeah, its a shame really, not that Simplex gear has all the bells and whistles, just good honest stuff that gets the job done, I guess postage and exchange rate would put it up there with those others. I gave my old Master press to a mate a few years ago after I picked up a Redding T7 at really cheap price, I now have the full length size dies that I use regularly permanently set up in it. The smaller Simplex turret presses I have set up for neck sizing, decapping, primer and projectile seating. I do like stuffing around with wildcats and the little presses are good for mixing and matching dies to neck down in stages.

Simplex dropped off with their loading gear for a few years after the original owner croaked, they had to concentrate on other engineering stuff to keep the place going, they seem to have decided to do more loading gear lately, it amazes me that there are a hell of a lot of loaders and shooters over here who have never heard of Simplex, guess they go for the stuff from the states as it is all you hear about in the shooting world. It is reasonably priced over here, probably half way between Lee and the other big makers, but the quality is right up with the rest of them, just dont have the range of gadgets I spose.

I came by some dies that were missing an expander ball and decap pin not long ago. To get it sorted they were really good to deal with, I forget the lady's name, but man she was super dooper helpful

I have a simplex press, similar to a rock chucker never had an issue with it seems solid and well made. I got mine 2nd hand, would recommend one if they are available.

Have a look at the Forster Co-Ax.
It has a different system where the locking ring stays permanently on the die and it slides into place and back out when finished. So its always set at the exact length you had it at last time. Also, the die floats and moves around to con-centre onto the case giving better straightness.
