Interesting article, also interesting listening to the Austin Buschman interview, it'll maybe make a few reloaders on here have a think about things.
Can follow this link directly to interview. https://youtu.be/MMeAhb06Vec?si=slM9cmibWFNdwz0j
thats a great interview
regarding Buschman and the lee progressive, you need to remember the volume these guys are loading in the US. they shoot more than we do here with PRS. the less time spent at the reloading bench the better
there is nothing wrong with using the lower grade press like a lee as long as you have a consistent die setup and understand its limitations. as long as brass prep (bump and neck tension primarily) and seating depth are consistent you will make very good quality ammo. you do not need fancy A&D scales and a zero press etc for consistent results but they do make better ammo.
Brilliant. Lee 4 hole turret press bought in 2010 doing all his precision loading. No internal neck button used in sizing die. No length gauging of brass until his borescope tells him he has to. Chamfers virgin brass then just tumbles it in corncob media for next 7 or so reloads. Doesn't care about concentricity too much and just trusts his Forster seating die to do the job. Doesnt worry too much about seating depth variables- doesn't check or change seating die for ever. Doesn't do load development. Been using the same 2208 and 2209 powder charges for many thou of rounds. Quality brass, bullets and barrels are the essence of consistency = his success. Uses Bartlien barrels exclusively and cuts his own chambers. Changes barrels before they stop shooting well- around 2000 rounds. Shoots as many or more rounds on his own range "for fun and plinking" as he does in comps. Most are shot at 400 and 600 yards. Etc etc. The goods stuff on reloading practice starts about halfway thru podcast.
I know a lot but it seems less every day...
Hes one of the best and most accomplished shooters in the world. It shows what matters.
In PRS there is also something to be said about the mental advantage of having a load that is perfect. the targets do get damn small sometimes and you want to trust where your next round will go. the targets at world champs this year were not as small as they are on other ranges. the challenge there was in the terrain.
good barrel, bullets, and brass are the essentials
Buschman definitely knows what matters and is extremely accomplished, you are spot on there gimp
