    Rocket scientists only

Ok my hat is spinning a bit on this so I thought I would open up a can of worms and get opinions

    Loading for 260 rem

    short barrel of 18 . 5 inches

wanting to use 120 and 140 grn projectilea

now to the crux. In this short barrel am I better to use a faster style of powder such as 2208,
and for the heavier projectile am i best to go with a slower powder at all or not bother, and use the faster powder for both.

    I have on hand 2206 2208 and 2213

Everything I have read points to the slow powder not being completely burnt in under 22 in barrels , wether this is an issue is still open to debate.

The ADI manual shows that the slower powder will give higher velocities but this is in 24" barrels I just dont know if it will be true still for the short tube.

You could use a faster powder to try get a complete burn but that is where you will find the limitations of your barrel as fast powder+short barrel+heavy projectile = pressure

The fastest powder should be the fastest powder an virtually any length barrel within reason as max pressure is reached in the first few inches even with the slowest of powders, what may or may not be an issue is muzzle flash and blast which could largely be negated by using a suppressor.

The faster powders for shorter barrels is more or should be faster powders for lighter bullet weights as often people run lighter weights to get velocity back.

But then I am no rocket scientist so take with a grain of salt.

Pretty sure @Timmay has some info on 2208 & 120's through quickload. Think it a favourable powder for 120 weight.

Unfortunately I'm not a rocket scientist, but I would be trying 2206H or 2208. See what your rifle prefers. A very old accomplished hunter and reloader once told me to take my rifle, and one of my reloads and fire it off in the dark to see how much muzzle flash I had. If I had too much, then there was unused/unburnt powder being wasted in the process and keep going to a faster powder until I got rid of most of my muzzle flash. It worked, I changed from 4831 back to 4350 for a slight increase in speed and accuracy.

Get quickload and process it on there. I used a friend's software and it really showed me how slow 2208 and 2206h are in my 18in 223. Went to 2207 and got a very good burn.

Scottrods ....I just got all excited about Quickload then i realised why you borrowed a mates. $150 buys a fair bit of powder and projo's too.

    But thanks for the info.

Thanks gents for putting it all down on paper for me.

    Keep it coming

I would load a few up of each bullet weight and powder and run them through a chronograph and see what's best, checking for accuracy at the same time.

Hey Johnd, if you give me your expected seating depth in form of COAL for each projectile, I can run the different powder/projectile combo's through quickload for you.

Just going through data now, 41.5gr of 2208 seems pretty hot for a 120gr projectile, be careful!
