As part of a deal I got some dies for my new 7mm saum - very well used/poorly cared for Redding 7mm Saum dies. The FL works well, just had to have bump the ram to chamber nicely. The seating die is putting big circular dents - not marks - into my 162gn Amaxs. Very bad for my OCD. I switched in a 7mmRM seating die and works fine. Can't see any problems with this...? I am not crimping.

Maybe 65 grains isn't enough of a compressed load to hurt the soft Amax when seating ?Quote:

Have you tried swapping out the bullet seater cup with the other die set? If the shafts are the same it's a slick, quick change and might solve the problem. ;)
Yes thought of it but didn't try has 7mmRM die is Hornady not Redding....and seems to work very well so not sure there is anything to gain even though I no longer load 7mmRM for myself.

Just ordered a new Hornady seating die from Outdoor Supplies for $48 delivered - problem solved. Sent account to seller, be interesting to see how he responds....not taking bets.

Obviously taking the piss.
...Although looking at the mark its leaving on the projectile, I don't think maintenance or the lack of it is the cause...

I had the same issue when using 280 brass for my 6.5 06 ... Until I neck turned it.
300 saum Norma necked down. Yes we both were lucky I read rather than heard his reply.
Yeah in my experience the neck can get a bit thick and increase the tension... Have you got a neck turner? I'd give it a whirl.
No I haven't got one...but in saying that the 7mmRM seating die had no issues seating them. Always thought I would draw the line at neck turning...but might as well feed the OCD monster.

It isn't putting a crimp in...and I adjust the seating cup stem until COL was ok....I could've set it up wrong, no sure how.
Try recontouring the inside of the seating stem a case chamfering works quite well I have done most of my seating stems with one and polished them with fine well and dry paper,
most of my shooting is with cast bullets and they are much softer than Amax's, some die companies make VLD seaters could be worth thinking about
Was just easier to buy a brand new hornady seater $48 to the door...the state of that die doesn't belong with my gear.
