    Short action 284 loads

    Hello

I've ended up with a 284 win built in a rem 660 action (not prefrence but the price was right and has a bit of history) due to mag length of approx 70mm I was curious to see what others have done with short action mag restrictions. Hoping to get something fairly flat shooting to 350-400y. I was thinking I maybe able to squeeze in a 140 accu bond or partition. I've got a couple of lbs of RL26, 2208, 2213sc, rl17 so would be keen to see what others have achieved. Or any other reccomend projectiles/loads. The last 284 was quite slow with 2208 but I was using heavier projectiles and was trying to push it a bit further. Currently only. Running a 1-4 leupold but may swap to a 2-7 and add a cds turret to make the most of the setup as it's fairly lightweight rig. Mostly to be used South Island tops, tahr/cham/reds. Cheers

140 ABs or 150gn partitions or 145gn Barnes LRX or 145gn Speer hotcore driven with RL17. 150 ELDX or the old 154 SSTs might also work quite well,

I’ve just scored a Vixen 3-12 im going to put on my 284. The BDC looks like it will suit for 400 yards. Good value if you haven’t purchased the 2-7 Leupold yet.

What’s the barrel length??. The 139 Interlock flat base doesn’t take up much room in the case so you can fill it with your RL17. The Sierra Pro-Hunter would also be good. Both will work really well. Anything with decent BC will take up case capacity in your mag length and no real difference for the distance you mention. Sounds like you are very familiar with the 284 anyway.

I got up to 57gns of RE16 with the 139s in mine with a long OAL so safe for me but it fills the case so your RL17 will be better. W760 is also pretty good for case filling. Again in mine I got up to 55-56gns but not as fast as Reloader

Looks a cool rifle - will be interested how it goes so post your progress please

I ran a LA but loaded my 145gr speer hotcor rounds short with book max 2208 for about 2800fps from a 19"barrel. Was mega accurate and an epic killer as well as being cheap.

Cheers for all the replys, I have some 150gr gameking I found today and also ordered some accu bonds as I've always wanted to try some nosler projectiles so will eb interesting to see how they go squashed in the case. I think I'll use up the rest of my rl17 as it's prob best to test some loads with that powder in summer due to temp stability, which I don't think it will be too much of an issue for my max range. Also note barrel is 20 inch so should get some OK velocity, just need to remember to take plugs hunting.
Scope wise I will run the 1-4 for a while as I priced up the cds turret for my 2-7 and its coming close to the cost of a second hand cds scope so may go that way instead. Will keep an eye out of the buy sell swap page.
I'll keep this updated for anyone interested, currently moving house so will be on hold for a week or two.

    Cheers

I ran 53.5gr of 2209 behind 150sgk @2770 from a 19" 284. Rl17 should get it humming though unsure if the accuracy will be as good as 2209

Nice mate, sounds like not a bad load. I don't have any 2209 on hand but have a few others to try so should be able to get a half decent load hopefully. Bit of a bugger I just packed away my reloading kit but hopefully have something setup soon to get some loads done, I'd like to take it over the coast mid next month but will see what happens. Will keep the thread updated for anyone who is interested. Cheers again for the reply.

I'd say RL17 and a 140 accubond would be a winner. (rl 26 would be the go if you were running heavier projectiles)

Please take this data with caution and always work up.

But i have used 53gr rl17 with 140gr remington corelokt in a short barrel and they have gone very well (17" barrel around 2800fps)

But please work up to this load. don't duplicate it.
