    Short barrel Creedmoor

    Hey fellas,

Just looking at buying another Creedmoor for long (er) distance plinking. I like the cartridge and am pretty happy to stick with it.

I found a nice 2nd hand rifle that has done minimal work, the problem is that it has been cut down to 19”. Looking at velocities, there is only around 100fps lost from a 24” barrel down to the 19”. But my main concern is more around accuracy out to 600metres (max).

    Any thoughts on this?

    Cheers,
    John

if it was still 24" would it be accurate enough for 650-700meters????
and there is answer to your question.

You will be fine, just dial for it. That’s a Tikka 6.5cm 20inch at 300m and I’m a shit shooter… 2600fps Tikka are slow

Being shorter shouldnt effect accuracy, just speed. Which doesnt matter overly much if you are using it for targets rather than animals.

Assuming one rifle with a 24" barrel and another with a 19" barrel could shoot the same groups at 100m and the only difference was 100fps in velocity, then at 600m you'll have a bit more drop and a tiny bit of extra wind to contend with but they're both still capable of the same accuracy

    My 260 with a 19" barrel is doing 2700 with 140s and 2800 with 130s.

Id imagine 2600fps with 140s would be fairly easy with the Creedmoor. Accuracy won't be an issue unless the gunsmith messed it up.

A shorter barrel of the same diameter is relatively stiffer, and will have less 'whip' as a result of vibration, potentially reducing one of the variables that affect accuracy.

I'd be thinking of running 123gr in a handy 19", you'll hit steel that range no problem but for hunting out to those ranges I'd be thinking something heavier than a 6.5CR, but each to there own.

I wouldnt be overly concerned about it, cutting a creedmoor down does effect the velocity more than some other cartridges but its not the end of the world. My wife had a tikka in 6.5 creedmoor which we shortend to 16" & shortend the stock as well (shes quite a small gal) so she could comfortably shoot it offhand. Made a great lightweight and handy little bush/flats rifle, it shoved 143gr ELDX along at 2630fps & 120gr CX at 2800fps (AR2209) It shot awesome tight little groups & claimed its fair share of deer. When you compare those speeds to what some other cals like .260rem, 6.5 swede etc can do at a suggested max charge of 2209 in the hornady manual (2650fps for the .260 & 2500fps for the 6.5 swede with 143gr ELDX) tis a rather moot point. I wouldnt be trying to shoot animals like deer at 600m with it but certainly fine for shooting steel at that sort of distance where retained speed/energy doesnt matter too much.

My Sako is 20" and the speed is still up there I'm getting 2810 with 143 ELDX so I wouldn't be to worried about loosing another inch.

That’s some serious speed, they must be really different than the Tikka barrel

Just read your post properly, you'll plink out to that range no problem at all with a 19".

Pretty much the same barrel you just need the right powder.
I can get those speeds with both RL 26 and Hodgdon superproformance powder with Laupa SR primer brass

    Creedmoor or 260?
