Short barrel powders (308 and 7mm RM)

    Hi all,

Getting started into the world of reloading. Got a kit on its way.

Just after some powders to keep an eye out for for the following rigs:

    22” 7mm rem mag (browning x bolt)
    18” 308 (savage)

Probably looking to run something in the 160-178 grain range on both initially.

What powders would you suggest for each?

+1 for what Kelton advised. If you can’t get 2206 then 2208 will work fine in your 308

Be mindful of twist rate, the rem mag will be 9 1/2 twist which could be not quite enough for some of the long projectiles in the 170gr range (175 ELDX for example) & the mag length is a problem with the browning, some of the heavier projectiles you will have to seat very deep in the case to fit the mag & that will take up powder capacity. If you cant find 2217, 2225 will also work well.

Also plenty of reloader 22 around but it sounds like a temp sensitive powder id be using 168amax and 162 eldm/x. Or 178eldm in the 308 but the 168 is very impressive i load it in a 16" and an 18" 308

The xbolt hells canyon 7rem mag is a 1:8 twist, long throat and long mag. Seems like it made for handloading long pills.. 2217(h1000) 2225(retumbo) will be your best bet.plenty around. I was getting 2900 fps with a 175 eld x using Reloder 22 out of a 26” barrel, I’d say it’s a bit slower than 2217 and 2225, never used them in my rem mag with a 175 though..
