    Short barreled 6.5-284

Anyone had experience using a short barreled 6.5-284? Thinking 18” using 140eldms. I see people on here getting mean results from the short barreled 284 so maybe someone has done the 6.5 aswell?

Yep a few people have tried a short barrel 6.5-284......

Its a waste of time, better off running an 18" 6.5CM id say.

I've had a 16" barreled 6.5x284 for 6 years now its my go to rifle, have shot 4 nice 8 point Sika with it. 143gn ELDs at 2750fps 130gn ABs at 2800fps consistently groups 1/2, far more efficient than my18" 6.5 Creedmoor

That's pretty underwhelming for a cartridge of that size that brass is probably rare/muck around sizing down or expensive with an overwhelming amount of powder .....

    PRC goes good @20 inches.
A mate of mine runs the 6.5 284 @20 inches, I think he is getting around the 2940fps with 140 bergers

Yea thought about the creed but building it on a sako Av so waste of a long action doing the creed. Other option could be 6.5-06 or ai version

6.5-06 or AI is still the 6.5-284 ballistics/case capacity....really no difference.
If you want a 6.5mm stick with the 6.5-284 but in at least a 22" barrel.
If you want a 6.5mm in an 18" bbl, then do what GWH recommends and use a 6.5 Creedmoor...just seat the 147gr ELD-M out right out (get the reamer in 6.5 Creed with a long throat).

I've done most over the years 6.5/06 and the AI version also 6.5x 284 which I think was either a 18 or 20" I'm not sure.
I really struggled to get the seed I thought I should.
I now have a .260 which is the way I would go it's even better on a long action as you can seat the long 143 or 147 way out.
The Creedmoor is a good option but I would still go .260 as I can get 2880 fs from a 20" and 2810fps from my son in-law 18" and the 284 I had only just made it over 2800 with the 130 Nosler AB although that was with 2217 and it probably would have gone better with RL26.

I've had both but now use .260 you do get a bit more speed from the AI but at best 100fps maybe less and then there is the mucking around of fire forming.
Just stick to a standard 20" .260 or Creedmoor

Mate's one was 20" and he was getting 2750 fps not trying too hard with 140 grainers.

6.5x284 .... great 6.5 round but would be totally counter productive to then chop the bbl ?? As others have said if you must have short bbl then go Crudmore or 260

    260 Improved 30° maybe @Uplandstalker @Mathias ???

Though if you've got the long action to play with a 6.5*55 or the BJAI version?!? Relatively cheap Lapua brass for the reliable old Swede or its' hot-rodded brethren?
