Hmmm, Dougie might be able to offer some numbers on that soon enough, her 260 build is just about done apparently.
I'd almost put money on her having touched off a ton of rounds within a week of getting it! :D
Ray.
Havent tried a short 6.5 yet but at a guess 2700 with 140s?
Gimp??
Gimp is out of the country currently but I thin his is 20"...
I have a 19" 6.5x47L
I've played around with powders, projectiles.
123amax @2800ish
100TTSX @3050
130Bergers @2760
140amax @ 2760ish
I'm getting 2950 fps with 123 am in a 6.5*47 with a 24" bbl and same veloc form a 6.5 Super LR with a 22" bbl.
2650 from the 6.5*47 with 140's, and havnt tried the 140's in the 6.5 SLR.
I'd be supprised if you get more than 2600 out of 140's with a 19-20"
2810/140gr at "slightly too hot" with 20", same speed with same load in 24"
Now estimate 2740-2760 with 1.2gr less powder and zero pressure signs on case. Estimate only.
Just done one that's 22inch an 2860 with 130 Bergers an shoots well. 38.6gr r15

Why would you hobble it with 140's?
Just have a look at outdoorlad's numbers gimp. Turning a good horse into a dray.
If you want to run the heavier bullets then why wouldn't you put them in front of a case that can drive them.
Because inside the distance that the lighter bullets are faster, they all work, and the heavier ones (if you use a good one like an Amax) catch up pretty fast.
Might as well have a 30 then working on that theory.
You can't get close to the bc of a 6.5 projectile with a .30 cal projectile of similar weight. It's a long range thing.
I meant three O ;)
gimp, if your that set on BC why wouldn't you go for Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Bullets :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: .264 6.5mm :: 6.5mm .264 120 gr A-MAX® that near to the same BC but you can get is steaming along, unlike the 140.
Apple lemon comparing those others when you in fact can compare the same at different weights.
Then a better choice yet could be Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Bullets :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: .264 6.5mm :: 6.5mm .264 123 gr A-MAX® (Grendel/LBC/Lapua) as it tips the .5 BC (well so they reckon) atnd would be doing same speeds as the 120.
Because the 140 is still better at long range, has more energy too
We are talking about an 18-20" barrel. Not a long range rig.
Would you honestly go grab a bush slut to shoot at long range?
I use my 20" barrelled 6.5x47 to do just that, so, yes
And given that it works quite well, how am I hobbling it by using a 140gr and in exactly what quantifiable way would it be improved by using a lighter bullet?
Ages ago I was shooting Ashlees 260, 140 Amax at 2930ish against a very accurate 6.5-47 with 123 Amax at 3000-3050 ish ???? (long barrel)
The 260 connected several times at 1280 yards the 6.5-47 not so much, if at all same conditions, I had 4.5moa for wind IIRC.
There is no reason why the 6.5 couldn't do it, it managed at 1100, I guess it just run out of steam with the light pill ???
I have noticed the same thing at extreme range with other rigs.
Bad shooter? (It reads like there was someone else shooting the other gun)
Also the 123 gr BCs haven't been tested by Litz last time I checked and I've seen them reported to be over estimated by Hornady so the 140, which already has an advantage, may be mo' betta. Also your .260 140gr load is super fast.
Makes my .260AI in a 24" barrel using good components, so far only getting 30-40fps more with the same projectile, look like a waste of time. Although I havent finished load development yet. Seems fast for a standard.
I think what you're referring to Greg is a compounding effect of pushing a sub-par bullet too far in sub-optimal conditions... No?
Its a long term plan this but I would be bloody happy with 2700fps from a 20" barrel and 140gr Amax's. Chances look good...
i get 2700fps with 45grns of 09 and 140 amaxs with a 18 3/4" barrel with a gunworks suppressor on it cheers
That's fair honkin for such a shorty. 45gns is pretty hot?? Or not?
Real hot I'd say. I don't even use that much of BM2 with the 120's
Id say its a 260 as you wouldn't fit 45gn in a 6.5x47 case
na it is a 6.5x55 75 finnlight, ther are 8 off us using this load,my mates tikkas are doing just over 2750fps with standard length barrels, its not hot i was using 48grns of imr4831 and getting 2820fps but that was silly so went back to our go to load cheers
That load is very similar to my 6.5x55 Buzzman. Info on either the 260 or 6.5x47 is of more interest to this though. I have a short action so it would be either of those...
coolcool cheers man
You can fit a x55 in a short action....
But why would you?
