Sighting in a rifle on a short range

Sighting in a rifle with VERY limited range available where I live

I want to know is there a formula for sighting in a rifle at say 40m or less or maybe at a stretch out to 60m
I have the following to shoot in want accuracy out to 300m
    222
    7mmWSM
    Roberts 257

I imagine the bullet type/weight/load etc will have some bearing on this but I do not want target accuracy just shoulder shooting most likely no further than 150 - maybe out to 300 occasionally.
So - I am thinking with a 222 for example if its 1" low at 50m it will be still rising and hit line of sight at say 150m and be low by 3-5" at 300m, but I am only guessing

A quick play with a ballistics app will tell you.

Yes and no, you kind of need to know the speed and drop to accurately work it out, and even then its just theory in my opinion. zero at 35 yards in most cases gives you a 200 zero from memory, or it might be 100

Not sure if this is of any help, but for 90gr 257, 1 1/2” low at 50 yards means it drops tp line of sight ( zero ) at 220 yards.
IE at 50 yards it’s still rising, and will drop to line of sight at 220 yards

Actually looks like I’ve said the same thing twice !
Google is your friend here, but you’ll need to know barrel length and projectile weight.
He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

That's pretty well along the lines I was thinking
If I miss you will all get blamed
Got to blame someone for being a piss poor shot - which I always have been

Any suggests on a good Ballistic App @gadgetman

1.5" heigth scope above bore......26yard zero and projectile going 3000fpsish will be pretty darn close to 3" high at hundy blah de blah from there on.....its old old old school furmula.
    as for ballistic app
huntingnut has awesome easy one to use...I will see if this old techtard can post link to it....
    failing that
    go to www.huntingnut
main page side box on left
about 3rd from bottom is "pointblank online"
click that sucker and follow ya nose.

ta dah...... chuck in what info you have and take edumicated guestimation for the rest.....it will be near enough to not matter unless you stretching barrel.
plurry interesting exercise to keep changing zero to find out most practicle zero distance for what you are doing...eg my .223 now is 2" high at hundy as it "fits" my type of hunting ranges better.

guestimating the likes of velocity/BC of projectile etc......if you are trying to head shoot animal at any range over 50 yards and arent 100% positive of your zero you are a flaming plonker to begin with......read whole thing and put it in context.......

I never said anything about an intented head shot, but if you think you can sight in a rifle at 40-60m and then take a shot to 300 you must be the god damn mantis and it may well hit the thing anywhere within a 3 foot radius or not at all

You will also have to know exactly how high the scope is from the bore. If you have low rings and the scope is 1.5 inches above the bore and you are 1.5 inches below "0" at 50 you will get very different results that 2.5 inches between scope and bore. In this example the fist is level at 50 metres and will not rise as it is not pointing "up" but the second will rise,

According to the calc I use, if your scope is 1.5" above your bore zero your 257 at 40 you will be peaking at about 1" high at 100 and about 2" low at 200 depending on your velocity. That should be well close enough to get you on an animal at those ranges with confidence.

Most rifles 1 in low at 25 yds are close to 3 in high at 100 for me.
