    SR primers in Creed cases?

What are the pros and cons of small rifle primer cases in 22 Creedmoor? Why do people use them? Thanks.

Pros : SR slightly cheaper for primers and allegedly better brass life, some people swear better SDs but hard to quantify

Cons: the Americans reckon you can get hang fires in the extreme cold

I think SRP are capable of bearing slightly higher pressure as well?

    Maybe it hides it better?
I’d imagine the safe pressure for the cartridge would be the same on both but I could be wrong

SRP 308 cases are a wonderful thing. Normally better ES & SD's & cases last longer due to more "meat" in the case head. Nothing wrong with standard LRP but I'll pick the SRP every time if that's an option.
Not sure about hangfires in extreme cold but had no issue's on a recent trip where we were shooting in 5'C temps in the morning. My go to SRP primers are the CCI BR4's but the federal goldmatch are also excellent.

    bingo!

percieved better consistency as well as later onset of "pressure sign" despite nominal max pressure being the same

    5c is not cold.

essentially dont need to worry about cold in nz... there is no such thing as cold weather here... anywhere...

I wonder if you can use the same loads between SR & LR?

Im asking because Jaco is putting a 22 Creed 1:7 20" Criterion barrel on a Tikka for me at present. Just slightly meatier than Tikka profile.

Wicked mate you’ll love it - Yeah I’d imagine so

If you haven’t seen it already, this is a great start point for reloading 22 creed

My experience with 308 Palma SRP brass versus Lapua 308 brass of similar weight is a small drop in velocity using the Palma. ~15 fps IIRC.
There is a lot of banging on about poorer ignition and the need to use magnum primers. I have never had ignition problems.
My SD's shrunk along with group sizes, not a lot, but enough to be recognisable. So, better or more consistant ignition.
The other theory is that due to the smaller primer pocket the case head is stronger and handles pressure better. Better for the "hot rodders" maybe. I have never loaded like that so wouldn't know.
My 6mmBR and 6.5x47L are also SRPs but as I don't have equivalent LRP in those I cannot give conclusions for them. The 6mmBR also runs a smaller than normal flash hole which I believe aids its excellent performance.

My understanding as others have stated, stronger case head, potentialy greater case life and cough cough maybe bit more coal on the fire..
Been using CCI 450 (small magnum) in my 6.5creed, mostly in the colder months June/July, running StaBall 6.5 ball powder,, no issues.

Copy and paste of below from Petersons brass website....
*Note: All our SRP casings feature a small flash hole in the diameter of 0.060” vs. the 0.080” flash hole found in our LRP casings. This means you will need an X-small/ Undersized Decapping Pin to deprime our casings.

Re hangfires, it is a thing with SRP's I have had it personally in a 6.5 CM burning 760 powder, changed to magnum primers and issue never came back.

Yes, you will potentially have trouble igniting ball powder with SRPs.
Having said that, I have fired just on 600 rounds thru my Swede Ackley using half reasonable charges of WW760 and have never had a misfire/hangfire. Get told at the range you MUST use magnum primers with 760, yeah right. Difference of course is my brass is LRPs not SRPs.

I use small rifle in 308 and 6.5 creed, LRP was very expensive and difficult to get, so i switched to SRP mag, (CCI450)
have shot dozens of loads at -30 and below, no problems yet, NZ isn't cold enough, for a problem.

I run srp in my 22CM purely because when I got the rifle you had to sell vital organs to get lrp and I could get 1000 smalls for $160.
No issues, the brass I used for load development had 9 firings and primer pockets still good as gold.
