Anyone got a good load for the 308 subs?
Thinking of using trail boss powder, what other alternatives are there?
What pills are you using and are you getting reliable expansion?
Cheers

Ask VC he made some up. theres a thread somewhere here about them. I think 13gr trail boss but he'll put you right what ever it is.
I used 90gr xtp untried on game yet but expand shot into wood dirt etc.
5.5- 6 gr trail boss

There you go. Fark I was way off
No issues with the case not being full enough?
I would have thought the 220grain projectiles etc would be more suitable? Never thought of using the lighter pills
I was told to use a 190 to 200grn projectile with 10-12grn trailboss. BUT I'm not a reloader and haven't tested or used.
another gunsmith strongly encouraged me to not bother, as 30 cal is 'too smal'l - that I needed 'a big piece of lead' to drop an animal even up close.
Admit I'm still interested if I can with my .308 if only for that sneaky shot where I don't want to disturb the natives. . . . . .
I went with that as its a pistol projectile and is spos to expand down to 700 fps. But Im dubious.
You would need a pretty fast twist to stabilise 220gr at 1050 fps.
Edward spanner hands has some proper expanding 30 cal sub pills in the pipeline.
How much longer spanners ?

I just got the call today to fly out next Friday, sooooooooo chances of getting lead mould/tube done before then is pretty slim
Got a BUNCH of ammo to load before then
Realistically, 6 weeks away before I'm home
Might get you to raid the scrap bin Cam for some 3/4" ID tube :P :ORLY:
Wouldn't it be better to use a softer bullet, like an A max?
amax is what i was thinking, also i dont think the tumbling projectile would be much of an issue, will probably make a better wound channel as long as accuracy was "acceptable" for close range shooting
True that. I just remember seeing somebody on arfcom use them out of a .300Blk on deer, seemed to do the biz
I'd be prepared to do the mods on the pills if someone was to make a simple punch..
LEHigh in the USA make expanding subsonic projectiles using a deep hollow point which takes a payload 17caliber projectiledown inside it. Google it.
Spanners let me know if you do make some, i'd be keen as to buy some.
I've been using 240gr SMK's with unspectacular results.
Kj
Not this but next weekend I have some home kill pigs and a ram to do for some friends, Il take the old mans suppressed 308 and the 90gr xtp sub loads and a camera;)
Hi cam.
I've found head shots are fine with any subsonic (from .22lr to 240SMK's) on any animal from sheep to cows... but body shots are a different story. I've only shot a hsndful of goats with the SMK's and they weren't bang-flops. I used to use a .38spl with hollow point 158gr flat noses snd shot thousands of goats with that one and had similar results.
Be real keen to see a bullet that can do body shots with bang-flop results (or close to it).
Kj
I wouldn't expect bang flop with anything other than brain or spine shot. Wouldn't think it could transfer enough shock.
What i expect is basicly like being shot with a bow with a quality broad head. Or if no expansion a field point.
So your bow hunting with another 30 -40 yards extra effective range.

I wa using 8gr of trailboss behind a 150 gr projectile in a 7.62X39 on goats. Had to be within 50m or they only break ribs and not penetrate. Sold that rifle and will be moving up to 458 subs
Spanners you reckon you could make something like these?

As in a payload bullet? I have a punch sorted for 17 in a lead core jacketed RBBT
Those brass pills rely on on fracturing. If the wings fall off (which they do) you basically have a solid.
Copper would be a far better material for a sub monolithic however still a lot harder than lead.
How you getting on spanners? or you still overseas?
Going to get stuck into them when I get back from work
Prob another 2-3 weeks before I'm home
All ready to go though pretty much
