The .338 Subsonic Controlled Fracturing was designed for outstanding terminal subsonic performance for suppressed bolt gun or single shot applications. The required barrel twist rate for stability with a muzzle velocity of 1,050 fps is 1:8. Testing has shown terminal performance is dramatically improved by inserting a .17 caliber payload bullet (not included) into the hollowpoint cavity. The hollowpoint was designed with a light .172 press fit and the payload bullet can be installed by pressing it in place or by tapping it in with a mallet. A 20 grain Berger appears to improve terminal performance over a 25 grain Hornady. The function of the payload bullet is to shift the cg forward and to direct the hydraulic energy outwards accelerating the expansion.
