    Subs in 44 magnum

I have in my posession a Rossi 44magnum with a 16" barrel which I intend to work up some subsonic 240gr loads using Trail Boss powder.

Has anyone else been down this road?

What was your accuracy like @100m?

    Cheers
    Pete

Yeah Ive only mucked around at the mo, I loaded up a few bombs using 240g Sierra's & 2205 which isn't the powder you want to use, but I just thought I'd have a play while doing some load development ( I did however discover that light loads of 2205 are very dirty ) & I did'nt have a crony so wasn't sure of the FPS

    Here's the info I was given by someone using a Ruger 44 & running suds which grouped well ( aprox 1.5" @ 100 ) & killed well

8-8.5g of trail boss & 240g Sierra HP pistol pills
Shoot it, root it & then BBQ it !!!

    Thanks guys

I have a supply of Hornady 240gr XTP and had settled on 8grs Trail Boss as my start load.

I'll post my results once I have put them over my chrony.

    Cheers

Well Santa really came through for me and delivered on the the little Stainless Steel Rossi 92.

Ole P38 musta been a good boy after all aye!

I even got a chance to sneak out to the range on Christmas Day when everyone else was snoozing with a belly full of food after a huge christmas lunch .

I shot several 3 shot groups over the chrony as below.

    Cal: 44 Rem Mag

    Projectile: 240grs Hornady XTP

    Powder: Trail Boss

    Powder Weight: 7grs
    Velocity 3 Shot Average: 890fps

    Powder Weight: 8grs
    Velocity 3 Shot Average: 960fps

    Powder Weight: 9grs
    Velocity 3 Shot Average: 1025fps

Seems 9grs of TB is the business with this Projectile/Rifle combo.

    Next test ..... Accuracy.

    Will keep you posted.

    Cheers
    Pete

10g of Trail Boss will give you 1080fps and great accuracy,

240g XTP projectiles easily pass through TWO tanalised 8 inch posts so be very careful where you launch them.

The subsonic 44 is great for securing dinner

    My thoughts exactly.

I haven't tried 10grs of TB yet as 9grs TB filled the case very nicely but I will give it a go.

I'm also hoping the xtp's will still open up a bit at subsonic velocity but wont really know untill I take my first deer/pig with it.

    Thanks for all your repiles

    Cheers
    Pete

    Muzza thats great mate.

    Thanks for the tip.

I've got a friend with the same setup on his Pomba rifle..... He's dead keen to try them out too.

I've used trail boss as it fills the case so no need for any wadding.

I'll let you know how quiet they end up through his Rifle.

1080fps is too fast to be subsonic all of the time, and loads that close to super arent really that quiet (in my suppressor at least)

8-8.5 TBoss behind a 240 xtp is working for me - sounds about the same as the .22 with subs :-) Only shot some manky sheep + hares with it so far but they were deader than dead!

I used the AP70 and found it diiiiiiirty and nasty stuff in subs. now what to do with 490grams of AP70
