    Subsonic 7.62x39

I am wanting a rifle for shooting on our lifestyle block. We are rural, but there are houses close by. I also want to be able to run supersonic loads through the same rifle for bush shooting.

I have been looking at buying a .357/.38 spl or a .300 blk. Then a mate suggested I handload some 180g pills for my 7.62x39 and try and get them going subsonic. Has anyone had success doing this?

Am I better to just use the excuse to get another rifle?

Yup, but I use 150gr cast heads, Trailboss.

Got it to appoint where my subs are spot on @ 50yds, full power hunting rounds are 2.5 inches high.

I was thinking of using .303 projectiles, something like a 174g round nose. I know they are 0.0005 - 0.001 bigger, but I'm guessing that won't be a problem in a sks

What rifle do you shoot them through?
The cz bolt action carbine has a 9,5" twist and would be a good candidate for sub load.
If you are on a lifestyle block, beware though, because ricochets are really worst with sub loads.

I did have the 303 cal .3105 174gr Hornady RN Interlock in mind. just realized Hornady have stopped making them.....there are also some 200g lead cast proj on Trade Me that could be an option.

Yup, my cast heads are from the TM guy in Tokoroa.

150gr FP for 7.62x39 and 200gr FP for 308, both using trailboss

I'm keen to try jacketed RN heads, coz teh cast ones are not all that consistent in in terms of weight, shape etc.

Normal hunting heads are Speer 123gr Spitzers, but theye are quite short, thinking of going to Speer 150gr Spitz or Sierra 150gr Softpoint to get longer seating depth (single shot, break neck)

Pls post your results if you find any suitable heads...
