    Tikka 7mm rem mag

    Hay Guys

very new to reloading (haven't done any) Have a few mates that are pretty well set up tho and they will be helping me. Iv just bought a new Tikka t3 superlite strata in 7mm rem mag with a Vx6
im yet to put any round through it. Iv got a box of cheaper federal stuff to break it in / start zeroing it and iv got a couple boxes of the hornady 162g ELDX precision hunter. Im wanting to do a load for it and thinking of sticking with the 162gr ELDX but open to suggestions and any info or loads as a starting point to load a ladder chart

    Cheers

the cheaper federal stuff (assume you mean blue box???) is actually pretty good ammunition with great reputation for accuracy.

the problem with your question the way its asked it this.....
you arent telling us what you want to do with rifle...
you arent telling us what you want to shoot with rifle...or at what range...
WHY this is important is because I will advise you to go fat round nose soft heavy pill...IM a bush hobbit
Mimms will say something like ELDM or ELDX super fast as he likes to shoot tiny wee bug hole groups at long range
DannyB will possibly say something similar with hunting orientated projectile.
Stagstalker may well chime in with his pet load for mid range deer sized animals
and it will turn into pissing contest and you wont have answer RELEVANT to what you want to do.
ladder chart.....hmmmm that suggests someone has had word in your ear telling you that you just have to do it to make projectile zoom along at warp factor 9 or it wont be good enough.....
have a crack at letting folks know intended use and it will be far easier to answer.

Search “7mm rem mag load data NZ “. Heaps of information on this forum as well. Adi2217, 2225 are the most popular powder

haha yea sorry. I intend it to be a hunting rifle but more for tops/ longer range stuff. have a potential Tahr trip coming up later in the year so will be a hunting round. Id like to think i could take an animal at 500m (as long as i do my bit lol) that said id like to get it shooting well at decent distances for the od days with the boys on the range. Bit more rifle info barrel is 24inch and pretty sure 1:9.5 twist. I like the look of the 162 ELDX

    Cheers

162gn eldm with either 2225 powder or 2217 will do the buisness all day
I have played with a few bergers and barnes but the eldm are not fussy, get em going about 3000fps give or take 50fps and find your accuracy node you'll be away.
I have a thread on here somewhere called "cant leave well enough alone....." in that thread I try to get the bergers to shoot without a great deal of success but in the end come back to my 162gn eldm load it's just such a great combo in the rem mag, have shot red deer from 150 yards out to near 400 yards all bang flops.
I have heard of performance issues with the eldx in rem mags both in getting them to shoot and how they perform on game, havent tried them myself so can't comment on it, in my 270wsm the eldx were the buisness but for me in the rem mag you really cant go past the eldm.
    My 2 cents anyway

Yep, as was suggested to me a while back. I went with eldx and 2217 at mag length. Sweet

The forum "go to"; 71gn 2217 + 162ELDX at tikka mag length....

Normal reloading principles apply, work up.

That said I had better results with 2225 as some others have found.

Have just been through this journey myself, started with 2225 and 165gr Sierra TGK at 84mm-mag length,

These were all over the show through .5gr powder increments and being mag length the powder was slightly compressed, thought since its mag length i need a slightly quicker powder to take up less case capacity, purchased 2217,

First group at 69gr with the TGK, just under an inch grouping at 100. Then worked up to 71gr and the TGK stayed about the same, however at this same time i was also doing ELDX 162gr, was considerably better, nearly all powder weights i tried they were touching or slightly off, if anything was me shooting off a bipod on a sunny morning.

Rifle is purely set up for tahr and thats why i chose the ELDX being abit harder than ELDM, possibly if you want to shoot deer could use the ELDM and ELDX as they possibly might have the same POI. Mines a basic set up with a T1 brake and Swaro Z5, am bedding it in the coming weeks and will test the loads over a chrono,

This was my experience so follow normal reloading precautions as always, 71gr is book max but has no pressure signs

2225 is as rare as Reloader26 at the moment. Hopefully 2217 is more available. Good luck

162gr edx is great but the 140gr nosler partition projectile is amazingly good at long range (1000m)

Retumbo is the same powder as 2225 different label if that helps. Both are getting hard to obtain at the moment but that wont last forever.
I have stopped doing load development at the moment due to powder availability.
Have plenty enough for hunting ammo
