    Tikka mag COAL

Hi, got a 7RM tikka and have loaded up some 162eld x to mag fit at 3.34 COAL. Got a pretty mild charge of imr4831.
Still seems a bit deeper into the cartridge than id like.
What COAL are others running with 7RM in tikka with this pill.
Just a bit nervous after a sticky bolt blown primer experience trying to fit the 150eld x into a COAL limited 284win

I would not it if need be. Just wondering if people are loading them in std mag. Anyone have data or a measurement of the Hornady precision factory ammo?

The Hornady Book spec for 7mm rem mag w/ the 162ELDX is 3.290" / 83.566mm COAL.

Personally I would load it as long as the mag would allow - then unless it is shorter than the 83.566mm COAL specified in the Hornady book then you should be ok to seat it to mag length and use the book data as a starting point.
If your load is shorter than the 83.566mm book length, then start a couple grains lower to take into account the reduced capacity of your load vs the published data.

Sweet man, that's the same as the btsp pill then. All good as I'm loaded 50thou over that length.
    Cheers

    No probs.
FYI if you don't have the book - at 83.566 COAL with IMR4831, Hornady's start load is 51.7gr and max is 60.6gr.

The hogdon data shows max load at 61.8 which would make my start load of 60.5 near max on hornadys book.
Also velocity is 2877 on hogdon at that and 3000 on Hornady at 60.6gr.
Quite a discrepancy. Anyone kind enough to do a quickload check on these would be much appreciated.

As far as I can see, the Hogdon data only shows data for a 162gr "soft point boat tail".

A 162gr spbt is going to be a shorter projectile than a 162gr ELDX meaning that when loaded to the same COAL, the projectile in Hogdons data is going to take up less internal case capacity allowing for a higher charge weight.

I would trust the Hornady data to be on the safe side. Theirs takes into account 162gr projectiles of differing lengths, including really long ones like you are using.

Yes, that makes sense. I might buy the Hornady book so I can have a proper squizz.

Could a kind soul run loads through quickload please.
    7RM hornady162eld x 60.5gr imr4831 24inch barrel. Unknown jump.

And the same with 162gr Hornady btsp.

Thanks man, that is commensurate with the data that I have. I'm starting at 60.5gr and 3.340.

Apart from my 284win experience I have loaded elds in 260rem and 6.5 x 55 to good effect as I've not been hampered by mag length and been able to work a jump to the lands that suited.(in the 260 anyway)
thanks for your help good sir.
