Thread: Updating a 22-250

So today I received a dummy 25GT case from @doubleshot - thanks Darren. I was pondering something somewhere between this (a 257) and it's current 22-250 barrel.

This shows some possibilities at the length I have to run them to fit the magazine at 2.5" or a smidgen over 64mm

Cases are 22-250, 25 GT and 6.5x47

Projectiles are 224s in 75 and 88gn, 6mm 103gn, 257's 115 and 120gn (not as long as the 130+ I'd like to run, but all I had on hand) and then some 6.5s just for comparison 130, 140 and 156. I already have a "traditional" 6.5x47 and a modern 6.5x47 so don't really need to go there.

Looking at the 257s I'm sorta thinking all I'd be doing with them is duplicating what I have in the 6.5s . . . . which sorta points to either a 224 or 6mm. I don't currently have a 223 bolt gun but will get another one at some stage.

So what to do, it's gotta be fast twist to move high BC bullets, I like the idea of a walking varminter that bucks wind and has sufficient energy to nail deer to 300+M.

Is there a potential problem getting the throat and jump right/getting the "right" reamer with these long projectiles seated well down into longer cases?

Thoughts?

22x47 Lapua

I have rechambered a savage rifle from 223 to 22-250 AI yesterday , the throat is more than long enough to accomodate the 69 grain smk.

But I have ordered a separate throater to be able to use longer bullets like the ones you mentioned for future build.

The 22x47 and the 22 creedmoor are promising as well, now that descent brass is available.
Any of these three and you can’t go wrong.

A collègue at the range just got a 22 gt built. Apparently there is brass in the country for it.

There are plenty of options alright...

25GT, 25x47, then all the various 6mm PRS cartridges, these all of course can be necked up or down to various 25 Cal or 22 Cal.

The 22CM and 22GT are popular and we have sold plenty of Alpha brass for them. The 22CM I believe is very comparable to the 22-250 if not a smidge better.

Food for thought, I'm building a 20BRA presently as I have a good supply of 20 Cal 50g and a large order 20 Cal 55g Berger Varmint bullets coming, have everything squared away just waiting on the reamer to arrive.

Personally I'm heading to the range toda to start load development on my 25CM, the bigger pills are great but for shorter mag length there are still some good options

At 2.5", I would be looking at an ARC or Grendel derivative.

Under 2.8" and it's not worth using an 'intermediate' round.

Haha that has also been in consideration - I shot a lot of stuff including my best ever Tahr with a wee Mauser Kurz 250 before I sold it to @nor-west.

One consideration is brass loss, shooting goats and wallabies I seem to come home with a lot less than I started . . . . Hence leaving $3+ per piece out on the hill rankles a bit! Decent stashes of 22-250 come up pretty regular.

Go for something with at least a 30deg shoulder.... 25-6XC

why not a slightly faster twist 22-250 so you can continue using your cheap n easy loads aswell,but still have option to stretch its legs with heavies.

This is a sensible idea. I felt, in approx 2008, that a 1:8 twist. 22-250 shooting the 80gr amax would be a good idea. It doesn't appear that much has really changed - its still a good idea

Personally I would just go standard 22-250 with a 1-8 twist. I had Truflite rebarrel a kimber of mine in standard 22-250 with 1-8 twist a while back. I was tempted at the time by the sirens song of other less available/newer cases. However, I am really glad I went standard 22-250. It shoots my reloads with the 80grain eldm very well and I can still go buy factory fodder in a pinch. I got the 1-8 twist so I wouldn't risk shucking jackets with the 50-55 grain factory fodder. My 1-8 doesn't seem to stabilize the 88grain eldm very well so if you wanted to shoot those you would probably want a 1-7.

I GUESS you could down load 55 grn pills to closer to 223 speed to keep them happy...or load mono jobbies at warp factor 9 for spectacular results too.
when I sighted in mine the other day..it reminded me how awesome it is now its been suppressed.

Go for the heaviest hammer projectiles for the 22 250. If the 223s do ok it would be the hammer of thor

73gr Hammers are doing 3650 from my 22-250AI. Have yet to shoot a deer with one. Soon.
