Any info on this? Not trying to squeeze every last fps out, an accurate load is far more important but if the mag can take it I don't see why not to do it?

A Throating reamer is handy when you want to tidy up some throat erosion/ firecracking, and as long as the magazine will hold it, then the extra powder capacity availiable when a projectile is seated out further in the brass can be handy.
The right powder choice with a decent length barrel will help. A factory barrel length may not yield much benefit.
The difference between a short action caliber and a long action one (with same barrel length) can sway a velocity gain in favour of the short action cartridge when long throating.
Perhaps due to a short action cartridge having more rifling length in a std length barrel.
I have long throated a 7 mmsaum, a 7 mm rem mag and a 338 edge.
The saums gain in fps percentage wise beat the rem mag, and the edge beat them both, but it has a 32 inch tube, so roughly 29.5 inches of rifling, and the saum only had 18 inches of rifling and the rem mag 21 inches.
The only way to really know for your combination is to try it !
I have a long throated 7-08 with a long barrel, it thinks it's a rem mag or 280ai.
The small cases with large bullets should benefit the most as normaly the bullet takes up so much powder space.
What are you looking at playing with ?
ala Weatherby??
I'm looking at wsm or saum with short barrel
A 7mmsaum with a 16 inch barrel will give you 3000fps with 140g projectiles, quite usable, the short barrel no slouch in the accuracy department either !
Not that short! Was thinking 20in with 162
Does anyone understand what Shaun Carlock is doing with his Edge+P? Sounds like its some sort of long throat arrangement.
Like Kiwi Greg my 7mm08 thought it was a 280 Rem - 24" barrel & long throat so the boatail junctionof a 180gr VLD was above donut gave 2,600fps & the 162gr Amax up to 2,850 fps. Scary performance for the little 7mm08.
That's at least 200fps off a 280. So not really comparable.
Actually it does, when a 280 with a 26" barrel is doing well to get 2950-3000.
Even a couple of Tikka Rem mags I have played with don't really like going 3050
As I have mentioned it isn't your typical 708.....
It has a 34" fast barrel & an extremely strong target action.
Yes, and if you run a 280 with a 34" barrel the velocity will be very high to. All I'm saying is that a 280 is a much bigger case and does make significantly more velocity than a 7-08. Otherwise we would all be running around with 7-08 long range guns.
I must have read your reply to LJP wrong.....or not ???

I thought the thread was about Velocity gains with longer throat as such LJP post has more relevence than mine as he has a more normal barrel length.
I went 708 to get the speed without the powder to keep the heat down & barrel life up for LR steel shooting.
I have out grown the little calibres & prefer to play with the bigger ones now, well out past 1000 when I get the opportunity.
I had thought about running my 280ai reamer in long as well as long throating it for a giggle :)
