    Velocity guesstimate

Anyone with ballistic ap can help please, looking to make light load for my boy to hunt with in the .308 but want enough speed and expansion for deer at bush hunting ranges(sub75m)thinking 30g AR2206h 150g hornady sst,16in barrel suppressed .308 as a starting load.

    Fallow or red?
Won't need a ballistic app, but someone with QuickLOAD.
I don't have it - one of the GC's on here can most likely give you what you're looking for.

I'd go even lighter a projectile to reduce recoil. I used to use a 130gr Speer HP in my 30/06 at full velocity. Should still work well at lower velocity, or a similar lightweight projectile.
30/30 projectiles will expand well at low velocity too.

Wouldn't be my choice! Case fill is around 66% according to Quickload and the
expected velocity is 1730fps with an OAL of 2.8"
With the 16" barrel you're only burning 74% of the powder.
One bonus - you are well under pressure @19k :-)

I used the 60% formula from the Hodgen site to come up with the 30g load, any suggestions on another load welcome.

Another use I’m looking at is shooting open sights on my gun ,I can’t use the suppressor at the same time due to needing the front sight but full power loads are gonna be bloody loud hence the lighter load theory.

You could also try a case full of trailboss. Use Shootrnz's cast 151gr HP they will expand and kill at subsonic velocities.

I've done some playing with reduced loads in both 708 and 260 rem

120gr bullets in each with 30 to 32 gr of IMR 4198

I got onto the 4198 from research I did on Yankie forums. It's the powder that Remington use in their factory reduced recoil loads for 7mm08. 30 gr for around 2200 fps

I have tested it in both 708 and 260. Far batter accuracy than the reduced loads using 2206h.

I can't see why 308 would be any different.

    Edit.

Ok so looks like you may want to be at a lower charge weight in 308.

Read the posts in this thread about 4198 and 125gr bullets

You might find using the 125gr Sierra prohunter as a projectile.
    I use a minimum book load of 45gn (H4895) doing 2800fps in a 20" barrel as a light load.
For a lighter load based on their reduced loads I tried 36gn load and that was about 2200fps from memory.
If you really keen on sticking to 150gr projectiles look at this, they were using 150gn prohunters for the testing

If you want to have a low load for a 308 , it would be good to use the loads for a 307 with the slow powders . Your 30 gn load would have a velocity of around 1800 fps ? .

30gr sounds way too low in a .308 case? I'd be worried abit the gun going kaboom

Using 2206H (H4895) ADI does say for reduced recoil loads you can go as low as 60% of a max charge in any cartridge that has load data for that powder.

I have found that these loads are generally not that accurate, whereas the IMR4198 reduced loads are much better

using 130grn speer hps or 125grn ballistic tips (cause I can buy them cheapish as 2nds off trademe) the recoil is way down from a 150grns we used win 748 powder and 2 grns below book max was a pleasant load to use.... Roberts 151s are great. its easy enough to down load the .308 down to just above 7.62x39mm or indeed .30/30 levels . the ballistic tips kill just fine n dandy at bush ranges from the x39mm.

second call for trail boss. safe, well known and hard to get it wrong.
10 gr give me 1450 fps in my 358Win on a 158gr pistol bullet.
12 gr gives me 2400 fps in my 243 on a 58 gr vmax.
both do the business on goats for me leaving a similar sized 1" exit hole.
    30 - 75 mtr.

from memory I think you can get up to 14 gr in a 308 case.
