Thread: Weird shoulder bump...

Before FLS. Can't do any harm and ensures a fairly consistant level of hardness.

No expert but makes sense to me.

@gimp used for hunting. It's a rem mag and comes on maybe a quarter of my trips if there's a high chance I'll be shooting longer than usual distances.

Your brass will die from failure at the belt long before you'd need to worry about prolonging brass life with annealing.


You will not see any measurable difference in precision or velocity consistency, absolutely certainly not practically applicable for your use case.


I wouldn't bother annealing - save yourself the time and admin.

This is a refreshing perspective thanks @gimp. Big fan of understanding the practical implications of the "optional" steps and whether they will make much real life difference. I had never bothered to measure shoulder bump in the past but it's a relatively easy one to control (as long as I'm doing it right, as it turns out). Annealing, on the other hand, is not quite as accessible and, as you say, may not be worth the time/effort in this case.

@Edunn gimp might be glossing over the other issues that pop up from not annealing. Personally i anneal every time now as it makes all the other reloading stages easier. Annealing with a gas torch is piss easy and cheap to get going. Seconds per case.

Redding gear is good quality and using all the same gear will help remove some variables so great you are doing this.

Youtube can be your friend when reloading and I think panhandle was one guy I watched and learned a lot from, I remember watching tons of reloading videos at different steps then when actually reloading I would rewind and pause alot. Now since I have done heaps its just repetetive now.

But inconsistent sholder bump is normally a sign of the brass needing annealing
2-5 thou is alot though
If it was 1-2 I would put money on that being the issue

I do it before FLS.
I do it every second load.
I use a small "holder" SIL made, bit like a socket.
I don't use a drill.
I've found 5 seconds is enough. But case and flame size might change this
Just drop them on the bench or in a tray.
Dumping in water does SFA.
Do it when it's nearly dark.
Dark blue or slight red ,,, it's done.

Perhaps leather gloves??

Cheers guys, appreciate all the input. I've identified the problem - measuring bump using the same piece of brass. Rest of the brass will be a little overworked but seems to be shooting fine anyway. Will be conservative and anneal after this firing anyway. @Roarless20 I may take you up on the offer closer to the time, thankyou!
