So who's running a single shot 30-30
16" barrel
125 nosler ballistic tips
Anything like that ?
I'm thinking of the standard soft 125s as fast as I can get them
Real world numbers appreciated

I did it with 7.62x39mm and pushed them with lilgun....... VERY VERY EFFECTIVE...and my barrel would not have been 16" @Finnwolf might know how long it is.... I would be very surprised if you couldnt get 25-2600fps
Yes that's what I'm aiming at
Stubbed and barreled a Baikal 12 gauge this afternoon
Still a bit to do but all the other parts are on hand to get this done ASAP

mate, that DEFINATELY gives me a hard on!!!!!
This one is fully legal length and I'm just throwing it together to do some load work with before I stub a Contender and make a 30-30 barrel for my G1 frame
mate, that DEFINATELY gives me a hard on!!!!! manual says a 130 will go just shy of 2500 with 130 grain pill from 24 inch barrel....so loose a bit for shorter barrel, gain a bit for lighter pill and gain a bit more cause you are doing the loading and will push boundaries in such a strong action.....
look to 30/30 pistol loads/data online 30/30 pistols are very popular hunting in US.
I quite like the idea of a 30 Apache (30-223) a better blackout for supersonic use with cheap brass
Good idea
The contender super 14" barrel data should work then in the 16" barrels I'm doing
Re the 30-223 Vulcan barrels have a 30 cal 1:7" 5 groove button on the way from USA especially for guys wanting 300 Blackout barrels
Then you just need a chamber reamer and dies
Oh and you should have chambered it in 375Win, I know you have brass for that :D
I could definately be talked into giving it a test run for you...... LOL.
Greetings All,
This thread got me thinking. How many .30-30 rifles are actually being made these days? The Rarlins aren't yet. I saw some new Win 94's for sale the other day in .38-55. Henry?
Regards Grandpamac.
rossi still making them... single thompsen contenders...... yes henry...marlin??? not so sure but surely they will otherwise the whole why arent ruger churning out the 66s answer makes no sense...
Barrel is fully assembled and curing by the fire
Mount is profiled to the larger diameter reciever
Attachment 201846
Rings and scope fitted to base and checked eye relief on another of my Baikal project shotguns
Attachment 201847
This is what it will look like finished
Two identical length parts just under 500mm
Attachment 201848
Scope is a 1.5-5 Simons Shotgun scope with diamond center aiming point with fine crosshairs within
Should be ok for fast close shooting
Attachment 201849
303 jobbie would be mint
Great project
Another wet day so it's finished
Put 5 heavy proof loads through it using one case to see how it went for sizing and primer pocket
All good
So I fitted the mount and milled a little relief for the bottom of the scope turret housing because of the very low mounts

It's come up nice
Exactly 6 pounds even as is

Attachment 201970
Both the halves are the exact same length

The suppressor that was on this barrel in a previous life is coming to me to go on it
The extractor needs to have an extension welded in and cut into the breech face
And the extractor / ejector selector spring needs to be fixed
check action for a wee lever...some of them have a lever that will switch between eject over your shoulder with a ping or just extract to lift out with fingers....
It's got the lever but the spring that holds it is very lazy
I think it's broken but the pin is pretty reluctant to come out !
I will punch it out with the hydraulic press tomorrow
I used the 125 bt in my 300 whisper at 2300ft/s. It performed pretty well on a fallow and a red hind. No big damages on the meat and very good penetration . It is actually a very good bullet at that speed .
First range session with the Baikal 30-30 conversion.
Everything done except the extractor but cases come out pretty easy
First 3 shots after bore sighting into two holes and 10mm ( just above scope objective )
Made scope corrections and fired another 3 shots into two holes again !
Squares on paper are 1/2" because a rimfire target
This rifle shoots way better than a Baikal 12 gauge conversion with a recycled 30-06 barrel and self made chamber reamer should
It's actually a really nice rifle to carry and shoot
I would have been happy with a 2 moa rifle with that barrel and scope
Turns out I have a sub 1 moa rifle
Also due to powder and projectile shortages I just loaded up just less than maximum load of W748 and I got lucky

that looks extremely good/functional/deadly well done that man, well done indeed.
I didn't really want go like it when I started because they are a Baikal
But these old ones are surprisingly well built and will take some serious punishment which is good for a take down pack rifle
And doing it this way you can get a really good low and solid scope base and mounts on the reciever
I have two more complete Baikal 12 gauge singles to play with

if you move the rear sling swivel stud around to side of stock, the cocking lever wont dig in your back if carrying across your back. that is a seriously good looking rifle. many a pig hunter will be drooling, its almost too good for that ,would make a very nice rifle for stalking or just going for a wander where "something tasty" might be encountered.
I've got a Ruger #1 in 3030, 20" and a converted shotgun with a cut down 3006 barrel, very similar, to what you have done, this i run cast 170gr and trail boss. about 1700fps.
pushing 125gr Btips and 150 gr soft points to 2500-2600 in the ruger #1, 30-30 and 748 for powders,
nice project you have done.
Thread revival! Shot this neat wee rifle at my place yesterday . . . . With powder coated cast bullets it'll stack them at 50M. Nice to shoot but surprisingly loud (with Hardy supressor).
Inspired me to send my unloved (so little used) Contender 30-221 barrel (1:8 twist) in to get opened up to 30-30. It's a 17" barrel and is exactly 5.5 lbs with a DPT suppressor on it. Leupold VX3 HD 3.5-10 cls-zs to mount is in hand and will take the weight to just under 6.5 lbs all up. My new lightweight 30cal - should poke Nosler 125s out at a pretty useful 2550fps for a nice compromise between weight, recoil and capability.
I did make myself another 30-30 to replace the Baikal that went South.
Stubbed a Contender barrel with a brand new old stock SS fast twist 308 barrel.
Turned it down really light and put a 7075 alloy sleeve on it.
Turned out great and shoots sub moa again Attachment 238938
Came up under 6 pounds with the ultralight barrel and 2.5-8 Leupold
