Whadaya reckon?
After a compact bush rifle but good for 200m.
Borrow mine, if you want to try one.
I like mine.
Yes, marlin guide gun. Impressive performance up close in a handy package.
yes but mine on a long range black powder cartridge rifle 30 inch barrel and weighs 10 or more lb so not really a compact bush gun lol
i have 2 mates with gide guns one in 45-70 the other in 450 marlin
good guns
Those with the guide guns what ammo are you using or are you reloading?
405grn RCBS cast bullet . . . fantastic for the big .45
and as luck would have it, that mold is on TM for 80 slides BuyNow
Good choice in a Bush Gun and would take game at 200m with ease. Versitile Cartridge with the ability to have a play around with some Black Powder loads if you are interested.
Could be a candidate for "Best all round New Zealand Cartridge" if you take Scrub Bulls into account?
@Jit the best factory ammo currently available in NZ is the Hornady 325gr Leverevolution. Reloads take the 45-70 to whole new level, My current loads are:
57grs AR2207 and Hornady 300gr projectiles these are doing 2110fps out of the 18.5 barrel.
Second load is 51grs AR2207 and Hornady 350gr FP for around 1950fps.
Both shooting around 1 inch groups at 50m with ghost ring sights.
Got a photo of your guide gun?
Also do you know how fast the factory ammo is going out of it?
Yeah I'll chuck one up when I get home, never chronographed Factory however from many sources online you can expect around 1700 fps for the 300gr Winchester/Federal etc and around 1800fps for the Hornady.
There you go, it's since had the scope removed, just using the ghost ring sights now.
Factory loads are comparable to shotgun recoil, more of a push than anything. Hot reloads are nasty off the bench but the performance is definitely worth it.

Awesome!
I run the ghost rings on my 30-30 lever but have a 1895SBL in bound which I have a small red dot and a vx5hd 1-5 for. See if they ruin the lines or not.
Personally I think it should be badass. Will have to get some hand loads sorted for it.
Nice bit of kit! Is that the texan model only ask because of the square hand slot.
Awesome @Nibblet you won't regret that purchase, the vx5 would make it a very versatile rig.
@Marty Henry Standard model I believe, itsan original JM stamped Marlin.
A 45-70 in its natural habitat. Remmington made with no issues I removed factory (what ever it is) and gave it a Tung oil finish.

Well ive looked every time I go bush and never seen one!
Mine came with the rifle when I bought it however, most shop's in the states have them or your local should be able to get them in. The two main aftermarket brands are XS sights and Skinner sights.
here is how to shoot it with a shorter barrel https://youtu.be/c0DHCtEIBGU
I have a single shot Springfield 73 which I bought off a nice chap here on the forum. Off the bench, with 70 grain blackpowder loads or even ''low powered'' 50 grains of Varget, with a 405 grain bullet it hits you like heartache, as they say. I havn't taken it out anywhere apart from the range at the moment, although I am dead keen to get a deer with it.
Ive chorny'd the 325 Hornady FTX leverevoltion with 20-inch barrel in my 3kg gun - 1900 fps. ouch.
I also run a guide gun, currently loading up some 500gr Lee casts
Yeah those little carbines kick abit used to have one myself I sold it to a nice chap on here;)
Glad to hear it’s going well for you
Heres my cannon
I replaced the trapdoor with

Rolling block 30 inch barrel
And weighing a ton
She still boots pretty well with a 515gn and 65gn of 2f
That is extremely cool. Impressive.
For the carbine a cartridge with a lighter charge of 55 grains was used if that helps your shoulder.
Nope the hole rifle is factory pedersoli
