Thread: Why do I bother?

In preparation for the up coming Ruahine Biathalon Shoot I have decided to use my BRNO 308 with 150gr projectiles

I had a choice of several polymer tipped projectiles and a couple of old school lead tipped projectiles and will be using my favourite 308 powder W748.

I decided on some 150gr Privi Partizan Projectiles that I had not used for several years, mostly being the tight bugger that I am I just couldn't bring myself to blast off 40 rounds using the much more expensive polymer tipped projectiles I have on hand. Instead preferring to save these for the Deer,

Early this morning I went out to the range and tested out my loads.

Why do I even bother buying into the marketing hype and the sometimes blatent bullshit and outrageous claims that emanate from the marketers, paying big $$$ for the latest and greatest polymer tipped laser guided projectiles that, if you believe the marketing spin, almost aim themselves, when old school, bulk packed, bog standard, lead tipped, budget Eastern European projectiles give me results like this out of a 30 year old Soviet Block era rifle with a blind old shakey bugger yanking on the gritty heavy trigger.









Now that I've got that off my chest, and I'm sufficiently under prepared

Any Gong at the Ruahine Biathalon Shoot next weekend, smaller than A4 and/or further than 100m will be perfectly safe and unharmed during my course of fire.

My winning strategy will be to meander slowly through the course of fire trying not to get lost along the way, concentrating on earning maximum points in the observation section.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself mate,You hit the paper,and the groupings are not that bad.I believe most of us have fallen into the advertising bullshit.

This is my target yesterday, sighting in a Tikka 270, using Standard Remington SP Core Lokt 150gr@160 metres.Between the bottom 3 misses and the top 4 holes ,I punched in another 10 rounds on other targets to get the last 4.Im happy,store bought ammo,$22 a box,works bloody good.

I find I'm constantly prioritising my time and it's amazing how I can always fit in a range session when I put my mind to it.

Was there at 07:30 this morning, best time of the day to piss around at the range.

Good light and no other bugger around

Was a tad frosty though.

At 7.30 I was swearing at the stupid cyclists taking up the road and not the bloody cycle lane made just for them.

Well Pete, most of us know that boring old cup & core bullets do the job. Take the Hornady spire point range, if your gun didn't shoot those good then it's probably a shitter.

The marketing people will spin it up to attract us that will buy into it and give those newfangled bullets a go. I don't get too hooked but I will try some of the new ones out for something to do. Love pulling the trigger and burning up powder, puts a grin on my face.

Your old Brno & those slugs were made to go together

What you on about @P38 that's awesome grouping at 400 yards.

I'll just be strolling around the couse too mate, my knee doesn't really do running these days.

Your onto it

My other choice of lead tipped projectiles was the Hornady 150gr spire point.

They shoot as well as these Privi Partizan projectiles.

Although the point of impact is about 25mm higher @100m with Hornady using the same charge of powder for some reason.

This BRNO also loves the 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, and on Deer it's always the same Boom/Flop outcome.

The only issue I have with them is @$60 for 50 I don't love paying for them

I can hardly see 400 yards let alone shoot that far.

These targets were shot at a much more respectable 100m.

Any chance you could put some numbers into your ballistic app for me and produce a drop chart for this load?

I use Barnaul .223 SPBT and its awesome accurate. I get consistent tact drives or clover leafs out of it all day. Have tried their .308 ammo but unfortunately my firing pin is too soft to reliably fire it, would otherwise be more than happy to do so.

I recommend you turn up with it sighted in for 200m. If you do this you'll be able to aim straight at about 70% of the targets. Just on the close, smaller targets aim a little low but not off the target and the longer targets (i.e. past 250m) aim at the top edge. The rest of it comes down to the wind

Also the majority of our targets work out to be 4-8MOA in size.
