By reputation, a .378 Wby is seriously punishing, not just because of the grunt but also the recoil velocity

So why is it then that there exist a rare few cartridges that instil admiration amongst hunters totally disproportionate to the rest of the world’s cartridges and their relative position in the ranking of killing power politics? It is probably a combination of things. Cartridges are about balance in usage, effect, ownership and romance. The 9.3mm cartridges and the 9.3 Mauser in particular are not the world’s best in any specific comparison, but when you compare all its attributes to the attributes of other cartridges, it makes it to the podium of disproportionate ability and admiration. It is for that reason exactly that I published a few journals on the 9.3x62 Mauser and dedicated myself to the study and promotion of 9.3mm cartridges. I have to say 280AI is now my favourite. A handloader's dream.
For big game: .338 Winchester Magnum (with 250 grain bullets).
For small game: 24 gauge
17 hmr, 7mm08, 308 win, 7mm rem mag and two 12 gauges. I feel like there is definitely am overlap with the 08 family cartridges I have and both could probably be replaced with a 243...

My most fun has always been the .22lr
I've got a 7mm-08 for the rare times I get to shoot something bigger but I'd prefer a .308 for the ammo choice.

wife and i have a small fleet 22lr, 22hornet, 223, 243, 6.5 grendel, 6.5x55, 6.5 06, 7 08, 303 and 12g
well - let me think - .22lr, .22MR, 22-250, .243, 6-284, .270, .303, 7mm RM, numerous 12gaige, - but the one cartridge to rule all is the 270 - can load it up and down,,,,
The one I want - a 2 bore rife, but my mate shied away from shooting it first.

Others I shoot that might not stir my soul to the same extent but are nevertheless great to hunt with:

I suppose the key word here is choice. I will exclude the terrible triplets .22RF, .223 and .308. Most of us will have one or more of these and often multiple of each. Between them they will do almost everything that needs to be done with a rifle with ease. Every gun shop will have examples of all three in their racks and ammo is plentiful and well priced. To be a favourite to me some effort should be required to acquire and use. My first favourite was the 6.5x55. It became my favourite around 1970 after reading a Norma ammo catalogue. Alas no rifles were available. It took until about 1990 to obtain an M38. Shot a few goats with it but it was not until 2011 that funds and my Scottish heritage made peace with each other and a new hunting rifle was purchased while sifting through the options I spotted that Tikka offered the 6.5x55 in their T3 Lite. Deal done. Some years prior in 2004 I had acquired a Sendero in 7mm Rem SAUM which is my second favourite. A nice accurate rifle but a trifle heavy which was one of the reasons for the T3 purchase. It sat in the safe for some time regardless of its favourite status but will be taken out to the thousand yard range this season.
Those are my favourites as of today and there are rifles I lust after from time to time. Perhaps some of these will find their way into my safe over time and achieve favourite status but they won't displace the current residents.

always wanted a .22hp Savage with .224 projectiles..totally unparatical and wont do anything I cant already do...but romance is like that.
chambered in a single shot break open with fast twist barrel...... one day maybe.
My most practical calibre that keeps the freezer full is my Howa Mini 223, but my favourite calibre is the .303. Especially my latest aquisition; a BSA 1916 .303 SHTLE III* (FTR) rifle. But I do have an itch that needs to be re-scratched; and that is a Winny 94 30/30.... I forever regret selling mine in the mid 1980's...
I re-chambered a .22 Hornet H and R single shot to 219 Donaldson Wasp because I could. That is similar to Micky Ducks wanting a 224 .22 Savage Hi-Power ( the original uses .228 projectiles and no one makes them any more ) But the Donaldson Wasp was THE bench rest round until the .222 Rem came along
I have a 22-250 and a 308. Have got deer with both. You can keep your common or garden 223, much prefer the 22-250.
Since this thread started I have dropped the 7mmRM and added a 243win. Still very conventional.
22lr .223 .308 i dont really need anything else
