Thread: Your go to Projectile

Do you have a go to projectile that you depend on to get the job done, whether it's hitting gongs at long range, dropping deer, varminting, or ipsc/ wild bunch/ cas ?.

For me, not so far. So I'm interested to see if there are common ideas across the responses, ie one type of projectile across many different calibres that keeps being mentioned.

I get that a pill in one rifle may not work as well in another, just after the general drift of responses.

Same for me, I've been using them for 25 years in several calibres. Sierra Prohunter wouldn't be too far behind as second choice.

I am also liking the ELD-X at the range, but haven't used it on an animal yet, and they don't do a 30-30 version!

The one projectile type I've had great experience with, and easy to get to shoot in almost anything is the Sierra Gamekings/Prohunter.

I’ve had great results with both of these at 7/08 velocities.

140gr Ballistic Tip
162gr Amax

Have a look at that recent poll on projectiles. Its very evenly split between four types: soft point, mechanically locked, ballistic tip, new gen high bc bullets. Four types with almost equal support. That’s pretty much been my experience over the years, you’ll never get one dominant answer, same as which calibre / cartridge.

Lehigh Defence 168gr CF or 194gr ME for the quickest subsonic body shot kills in my 300 blackout and 208gr ELD for long range head shots. The 270win isn’t fussy from 110gr to 150gr but using 150gr nosler LRAB for the best long range killing for a few years now. 65gr Sierra game kings for everything in a 223rem, 55gr v-max if varmiting only.

Targex 95gr 6mm, closely followed by Sierra 85gr 6mm. Both great projectiles for the 6mm/.243 calibres

Sierra tipped match kings in all cals for all purposes.
They seem to out shoot everything else Ive tried and easy to develop loads for. Fast became my go to.

Partitions for every calibre out to 300 yards, long range AMAX or TMKs
