The apex predators are different to purring pet moggies or strays. They can weigh up to 7kg and feed on everything.
yes the damn things are everywhere - having been in the position of controlling cats thats big numbers - this above from the article was dumb reporting -strays -- not that different to feral - thats how many become feral - and then there is the 5-? what generation wild - even days back into Te Urewera cats - now how long have they been in there many could be 10-20 generation wild or more - time people woke up to the problem and articles like that really help - I shoot first always have
Road ends seem to invite dickheads in dropping their so called loved pets to get rid of a problem, I just happen to live at a roadend, and some of the cats don't seem to know what they are doing at nights, conclusion, a friendly moggy chucked out to look after itself.
yes same here when at Stratford - lived up against National Park - shot around 20 a year- turn up at my place mewing outside window - hey look moggy a brno 2 barrel
THIS is the very reason getting a pet speyed or put down should not incur a charge.....a drop off facility for any and all cats,no questions asked NEEDS to be available...it is the only way we will ever get a hope in hell of keeping ahead of the issue of dumped cats..give people a place to dump them.

This guy could use quite a few spare cats...
These people need recognition for their efforts. Cats are just so destructive when left to their own devices. When out and about on doc estate doing pest control any cat further than 100 metres or so from nearest house and not wearing a bell gets a bullet no hesitation. Most private land same deal, apart from ones I’m shown as off limits. It’s surprising how far away from home I’ve seen one Birman cat, complete with bells on collar, up in native bush in one area. Molesworth station is another place you never know where you’re going to see a cat, results from early days when workers brought ‘stray cats’ back from Ch-Ch etc for rabbit control.
I had this problem years ago, had a cat that started pissing on everything we owned when when we brought our new baby home. Took him to spca and they charged me $60 to leave him there, and they fudged the adoption sheet ticking the friendly affectionate when I specifically said he was skittish and pisses on everything.
I said if I knew it was going to cost me $60 I would have taken him to a mates farm and dispose of him, to which I was told was illegal. I said "what, illegal to shoot a cat?" and the girl was adamant that it was illegal. I paid the money and advised her to do some research.
As far as I am concerned cats should be same rules dogs, keep it under control when not on your property (otherwise on your property at all times), registered, micro chipped and no more then 2 on any property inside town boundary and you must pick up you cat shit.
If its good enough for dog owners why should cat owners be any different.
