    .22 Subs performance

    Hay guys

So i just got my cz .22 and i did an ammo test, I found cci subs and winchester subs 40g shot about the same

I had a lot more cci so sighted in and went possum shooting

I found the Terminal Performance Terrible, I made good normally one shot kill shots but found 4 out of 4 needed a 2nd or 3rd shot.

I normally have used winny blue subs and found the terminal performance great

Could i just have a dud pack or do cci not kill aswel?

    Cheers
    Shane

If you've ever hunted with an air rifle you'll know its all about shot placement

CCI subs through my CZ455 seem to work the best. Ok, they always pass right through an animal, but I know where they are going to shoot so I can place shots with more confidence.
I ran a bunch brands of .22lr subs over a chrony, and group tested them. The Eley match ammo was the most consistent (no surprise there), followed by the CCI, winchester, remington.

I'll add the details when I find the post.

The CCI when sorted by rim thickness, pretty much matched the Eley. Shame it's such a tedious process.

What I did find is that the barrel shot a lot better after about 200 rounds through it.

Here's the post from the Thread: "Subsonic 22LR round for hunting?"

Tested Winchester 40gr Subsonic, CCI 40gr subsonic, and the eley match 40gn at 25m, and chronographed each of the 5 round groups.

    CCI. 5 shot group: 0.213"
    velocity: 1075, 1086, 1067, 1061, 1083

    Winchester 5 shot group: 0.441"
    velocity: 1024, 1004, 1011, 1015, 1014

Eley match 5 shot group: 0.160"
    velocity: 1110(supersonic), 1083, 1057, 1075, 1070

Winner for the hunting ammo was the CCI, and was really quite impressive. Looks like I will be sticking with that for a while.

Measurements in the images are measured across the outside of the grouping, rather than centre-to-centre.

When I do my bit, they kill just fine. In fact all of the brands kill small game perfectly.
It's only when I'm shooting past 80 meters that the CCI and Eley come into their own - head shots as opposed to chest shots are still on the cards.
The Eley is a solid round, but kills rabbits, hares, etc very well. Cost and availability are the limiting factors for using match ammo in the field, as well as how far it travels once through the target.
CCI was by far the best compromise of cost vs consistency.

The truth is that possums are hard to kill. I've never had a "head shot" rabbit walk off, but it happens all the time with possums. I think their heads are small versus the body and not much of a neck, making a more difficult shot.

It's one reason I changed up to a 17hmr, possums have evolved to fall out of trees landing on there heads!

I had some trouble with this until I put a laser on the rifle sighted for 5 meters. Looking through the scope gave a 1.5" difference in point of aim to the laser. This effectively equated to the difference between the bore and the centre of the scope.
New normal then became: Put red dot on possum head, pull trigger, bang, dead possum on ground.

That is a basic mistake at that range quentin, out to 15 metres or so you have to aim high.

try the 42grn winnies and you wont go back.
possums you can either poke third eye socket or chest shoot...risk with chest shot is will they drop out clean or hangup in tree. with plucking it doesn't much matter where you hit them and the mighty .12ga solves the not coming down thing with ease.....good load of #2s and they coming down in a big hurry.
