Autumn-calving dairy herd? Time for feral cat control...

If you know someone with calving cows at this time of year, see if you can get around the surrounding paddocks with a spotlight after dark once or twice. The afterbirths seem to be a real drawcard for all the feral cats in the area.

We saw this last year, and went out last night for the first time this season. Saw five, on a farm that is trapped year-round. Got two, and will be back with some longer range armament. They're wary buggers...

Good opportunity to support the game bird population ahead of the coming season!

Love those blue eyes. We give them high lighter. The 243 is great medicine on them. Last hunt my son nailed a cracker shot on the run with the 223. Can’t outrun a 65gr Sierra.

Lots of calves around now on the farms. Looks like the farming landscape is changing to being dry in the summer and milking thru the winter

If anyone else gives it a try, I'd be interested to know how you get on. We've only tried this on the one farm, though I can't see why it wouldn't be the same elsewhere.

Not that we spotlight that much, but at other times of the year you'd maybe see one cat every 2-3 trips. Near the calving cows at this time of year it's multiple cats each trip.
