Black rabbits area throw back to the original lines that were introduced, or silver tipped to be accurate.
Very common in areas of primary release such as around Kaikoura from memory.
Shot a fair few twofa's mostly with a shotgun, best I ever did was 4 with one barrel, very quiet rabbits so able to move around to get the alignment.

Was the cage damaged?, come to think of it I shot a rabbit while mounted once, with a shotgun
