CCI Mini Mag or Stinger

Hi all. I've got some hares to shoot that I used to use a 22mag on. Now I've got a 10/22 with barrel and suppressor wrapped in carbon all one unit. I was thinking of a bit more knock down power at the 50 to 80 yard range.

What I am wondering is if anyone has tried the cci Stinger and the segmented bullets?

They both have the same weight prod and same listed velocity and energy, but the segmented is supposed to break into 3 pieces on impact and do more damage. Anyone used these rounds? Or should I just stick to heavier slower minimag? Any help appreciated

Segemented showed no better killing power over the standard subs, stingers are good and can make a mess in my experience

Hang on , i think i had segemented subs not the high velocity ones you show in the photo. Stingers are good ignore everything else i have said :thumbsup:

Yeah I was thinking stingers but wondered if they were worth the extra coin.

I used those CCI segmented extra fast ones (quickshock I think they were called) for a while, they definitely killed well but they were never particularly accurate through my rifle.

I have a 10/22 with suppressor and i originally bought a brick of winchester 40 grain subs. I had a lot of trouble with them not ejecting and jamming the action. I swapped to CCI mini mag and they rarely jam. Fairly accurate over short range I've found. Id buy a box of each type and try them through your rifle.

Dude I would be more worried about hitting them if your using a 10/22, they aren't exactly renowned for accuracy, not taking the piss ( well maybe a little ) but you might have to really experiment with what gives you the best group of of that rifle.

If you are using ( may have misread here) some type of full overbarrel suppressor, these often entail porting of barrel and your ammos may run alot slower. Even 1200fps supersonic can end up subsonic - so charts may not be accurate.

I agree with earlier comments that if you wish accurate 50-80m shooting, a ruger is not the rifle of choice. Also agree would be good to just set up some paper and see what does shoot well in your rifle. I have found some hyper velocity rounds have half the bullet drop (much flatter), but also half the accuracy.

If you have a match chamber in your 10/22 ( I know normal is fine) but match chambers can't handle the stingers due to the tightening of the tolerances. Same as if you have a kidd or volquartsen barrel / chamber combo.

True that. Barrel is a shortened 10/22 barrel with nil ports. Has the suppressor at the end of the muzzle and skinnier shorter barrel and suppressor wrapped. It does shoot cci sub reasonably well and I am sure some of the shots were further that they looked [emoji12]

CCI mini mags shoot a tad more accurate than anything else I've tried for my rifle. I've got a few hares on a pine block so stalking in to 40m is possible, but most shots are 50-65m. I've found that it doesn't matter what I use as long as you hit then in the neck chest junction they'll go down fast and good quick clean kills.

I zero at 50m and use the pine tree spacings as my rangefinder, just count the number of trees between myself and quarry.

The cci segmented ones group like shit in my cz.I just tried some 45grn cci suppressor which grouped well tonight.Will see how they do on possums later

I found the 42gr Winchesters in the black box really good on grouping

when shooting high velocity i use the cci segmented rounds from my 10/22. great knockdown in my opinion though i see some others disagree

I have taken the carbon tension barrel off and fitted back the longer stainless barrel and Mae can. Have swapped the old vx2 1-4 scope for a 2-7. Quite a dramatic difference in clarity at night by going to a new vx2. Will sight in tomorrow night with a few of the above suggested rounds and see how in goes. Thanks all.

I agree with GravelBen the segmented rounds were called Hi shock and they were pretty good on small game. I used them in a JW 15 and they were accurate and I used them mostly on possums as I was plucking them for the fur back then and found that a chest shot with one of those put them down on the spot most times, where as the subsonic Winchesters would require more than one sometimes. When plucking the possum I would sometimes find three exit wounds about 3/4 inch in dia where the bullet had expanded and passed on through.
You can't pluckem if they run away so on the spot was what I wanted. The 22 magnum worked well on any angle shot on the possums not much escaped with them.

Your HVHP video has really opened my eyes to how lethal 22 HP bullets can be.

found this one quite by accident but would agree with the findings, i was once told hollow point for bunnies and solids for hares (extra penetration) but having tried the pre fragmented HV i use them on both with great results. i think CCI does a pre-frag subsonic but i have too many 22 rounds at home top warrant buying a pack

I use stingers, work well.

Check the chamber on those barrels though.

Stingers are longer than 'standard' length .22lr and wont chamber in some match barrels or can cause issues if they do.

Have seen them stuck in a whistlepig before.

Haha I was just about to say that, here's a pic of CCI subs vs CCI Stingers, both are .22lr but have different length cases, the longer Stinger length cases was used to neck down to make the .17 Mach 2. The more you know.

What do you hunt? if it is goats then whichever with more energy. But if rabbits and possums then whichever that is more accurate.

Most mid-low end 22 rifle (500 dollars or lower brand new as of 2016) will not be reliably head shot a rabbits at 80 meters using supersonic ammo. Take into further consideration that depending on the terrain and height of grass you may not be able to use a bi-pod or any sort of rest, you may have to take the shot kneeling or sitting and shoot free hand. Even with a mid-high end rifle and more accurate ammo such shot is difficult.

I recon there's a few rifles out there that will consistently shoot a rabbit in the head at 80 in that price range humble jw springs to mind

My old bsa was head shots to 65m never really tried any further

Yes standard 10/22 barrels are not known for accuracy and neither are stingers. I found power points gave best knock down.

CCI Velocitors are the tightest shooting rounds in my 10/22, that's my go to varmint round in a .22LR. It's a fast 40gr round. The 42 Max by winchester are all over the place for me.

I did here a few yrs back not to use stinger ammo in a semi auto. The bolt slides back to fast and shatters the spring seating. I did have a 17 mac 2 semi auto the rounds from this rifle are a nick down stinger I shot off 10 - 15 rounds then the rifle fell apart. the bolt on the semi was opening up to hard, I went through 2 of these rifles before I went back to a bolt action.
I now use a 10/22 ruger hunting rabbits in the south island.

Thanks for the link. At first glance it looked interesting. Then I did some research and what I found is disappointing, to me at least.

The first problem is price. 10 USD per 50 in the States. Rule of thumb is double that number is what we will probably pay in NZD. That means at the least 20 bucks per 50. we are now in 17 hmr / 22 WM territory. If you already have a 17hmr or 22 WM rifle you would have no reason to buy the CCI copper.

The second problem is that marlin and ruger have both advised against use of this ammo in their semi-22. Presumably too much blow-back energy. Probably not an issue if you are shooting bolt action.

The third problem is accuracy. To me this is fatal. Usually I do not pay much attention to Chuck Hawks because he seems to praise almost every thing that is made in the USA, even if they are otherwise reputed mediocre. But with the CCI copper even Chuck says it is bad, so bad that he would not take it to hunting:

"My first experience shooting Copper-22 ammo was from a Weaver stance at a 25 yard NRA pistol target placed at only 15 paces. I borrowed Bob Fleck's New Model Ruger Single Six revolver (Model 0622) with a 6.5 inch barrel for this informal first experience with the new CCI ammo, as this day I had brought a .22 WMR revolver to the range. To my dismay, I managed to shoot a five shot group measuring about 4.0 inches, center to center.

Now, while I am not the world's greatest handgunner, I would normally expect to put five shots into about 1.5 inches or less at that distance. I had, for example, just shot a 2.0 inch group, followed by a 1.0 inch group, at 25 yards with a six inch barreled S&W .22 Magnum Masterpiece revolver, using CCI Maxi-Mag HP-V .22 WMR ammunition.

Well, maybe the Single Six revolver and the Copper-22 ammo just didn't get along. Sometimes this happens. I discontinued shooting with Copper-22 ammo until I could get to the more formal upper range area, which features solid bench rests and target stands at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards.

The following week, on another beautiful summer day, found me ensconced at a sturdy shooting bench on the upper range, aiming at a 25 yard NRA slow-fire pistol target across a padded rest. This time I was using a Colt Diamondback target revolver with a six inch barrel that, although it has a slight preference for CCI .22 LR Mini-Mag HP cartridges, has always proven very accurate with all conventional .22 LR ammo.

Unfortunately, the accuracy results were about the same. Five shot groups with the Diamondback varied from 4-1/2 inches to 7 inches at 25 yards.

My final accuracy testing was with a Henry Pump Octagon rifle fired from a rest, also at 25 yards. (Normally we test .22 rifles at 50 yards, but by this time I was cautious.) This particular rifle, equipped with a 3-9x riflescope, averages about 1-1/2 inch groups at 50 yards with CCI Mini-Mag HP ammunition.

With Copper-22 ammo, my best groups from the Henry rifle measured 1-1/2 inches at 25 yards (half the normal distance!) and the worst group measured a full 6 inches. The latter was enlarged by a wild flyer, which I did not call and which should have been in the group. At that point I quit testing."

OK... So no CZ and no Annie. But even if you half the grouping with a high end rifle it is still unacceptably bad - 0.75 to 3 inch group at 23 metres! If my 17 HMR did 3 inch at 100 metres I would be disappointed.
