It’s illegal to hunt with handguns in NZ. Handguns are heavily regulated in NZ. Need a special licence and they can only be shot on a designated pistol club range.
In my youth, I was shooting a ruger mk2 22 auto pistol with a laser sight at a target on a ranch in South Dakota .
When a jack rabbit popped out near the target, I unloaded the whole mag at him on the run , but did not connect .
That is my only handgun hunting experience.
Hunting in NZ is limited to airguns only, but with some pretty serious PCP pistols available up to .50 cal it is absolutely doable. I know of red stags taken in NZ with PCP air pistols.
Most of the big bores are fairly custom made jobs to be fair, I don't think the police would sign off on the import permit especially given they don't even need a licence here.

Used to hunt with a modified crosman 2240 co2 pistol. Just rabbits and possums.
I use one for up close pigeon control. I tried it on rabbits, but i'm not good enough a shot.
